Know what you're buying before you buy it.

First, body armor needs to be fitted to the wearer. I'm not an expert, but I do

know that " one size fits all " works for sexy backless hospital gowns, but not

body armor.

Second, kevlar is a brittle fiber. There is a recommended life span, whether

it's used or not. If it ever does the job it was intended to do (stop something

from tunneling through a person), the kevlar life span is over. Remember that

all of our personal protective equipment is disposable - gloves, masks, gowns,

turnouts (if it ever gets really stressed), and kevlar.

Third, no piece of personal protective equipment is more personal than body

armor. Gloves protect you from potential injury. Body armor protects you from

intentional injury - somebody is TRYING to hurt you. When I buy body armor, I'm

going to put my eyes on it, my hands on it, and my body in it before I spend any

money. I don't buy shoes over the internet; why would I buy body armor over the

internet?

Fourth, there is body armor intended for ***stab resistance*** and body armor

intended for ***ballistic resistance*** (as in bullets). There is a difference,

but again, I'm not an expert on the subject, so I can not explain the specifics.

My suggestion would be to ask somebody from your local law enforcement agency

for advice on the subject. Additionally, they can probably point you toward a

vendor where you can put your hands and eyes on, and body in, some real body

armor, and if you're lucky, you might be able to get in on their contract price

for body armor, which will save you a few bucks.
