I find it very sad that Ems will no longer be operating. I was one

of the first paramedics for the hospital based service, went it went from

being a private service. There were only a couple of us and we worked a lot of

hours to keep the county covered. We did it for the citizens of , and

now it will no longer be, well at least until one of the powers that be,

becomes a patient or loses someone they love due to response time.

This is really proof of the need to push to have EMS become a

required service. This could happen in any of our communitys when

budget time rolls around. It is sad so many will be unprotected.

And how many will dial 911 and still expect an ambulance within a

reasonable time yet none will come.

I wonder if someone dies when no ambulance shows up if their family

could win money. My thinking is based on there was a history of an

ambulance being there, so there would now be a reasonable expectation

that there still is an ambulance. Don't know if that would hold

water in court.

Well I hate to see the loss of a service but I actually think it

could actually be the first of many as everyone looks to cut funds

from the budget. Sorry for rambling.

This state does not mandate EMS. I've worked in 4 states, and none of

them mandated EMS. That is part of the problem.

In order for the State to say that, it will require legislative action.

Every time such a measure has been attempted, the Texas Municipal League, which

represents a majority of the cities in Texas, the associations representing

county commissioners and judges, and other organizations controlled by local

politicians have fought the measure tooth and nail. THEY HAVE THE POWER. EMS

does not.

It will take a major public uprising and revolt at the grass roots level ever

to get this through, and I do not see that happening. People are quite

ignorant about the EMS system, and all they see is a tax increase if service

were

made mandatory.

Local officials still rely on private companies to jump in and take over the

services either free or with a low subsidy, and there are plenty of EMS

Company Wannabees that will show up and run a fly by night operation to grab

some

bucks. They will pay their medics like wetback labor, use worn-out ambulances,

and the county/city officials will say, " See, we have EMS service. There's

no need for a state law. "

Try getting an emergency service district through at a time when gas is $4.00

a gallon. These are the realities.

I do not see the Texas legislature making EMS a required public service as

long as there are private services that will show up to do it.

Just wait. Soon you'll hear that " Bubba and LeRoy's EMS and Lawn Service "

is coming to County. Or, more probably, " Abdul and Amahd's Nigerian

Ambulance. "

This state doesn't require any public safety service...except an elected

sheriff.? DPS was created by legislation, but PD, FD, Public Works, etc are not

required or mandated by the state for any jurisdiction...and the danger of

attempting this is we may actually shine light on this fact...that we are not

required and potentially damage some of us while attempting to save others.

The other issue is when we talk " essential service " ...we get into a big can of

worms.? What is essential?? Water, Fire Department, Street repair, EMS, code

enforcement, law enforcement????? I guarantee that all of these groups sure feel

they are essential...and depending upon circumstances and the time of day, our

public feels each of these may be more essential than others.?

It is not an easy answer or easy solution...

,

What I was referring to, perhaps maladroitly, is the influx of Africans who

are applying for and receiving licenses for fly-by-night ambulance services.

Ask anybody at DSHS about that. If they were Brazilian, I would have

targeted them. And yes, maybe Chuck Curtis is still around and ready to

surface

again with the 1,000th version of SLEAZE EMS.

You did not take umbrage at my use of Bubba and LeRoy, did you? So it's OK

to make fun of fat redneck stereotypes but not of anybody else?

I hate political correctness. It's time we got over that. It's satire, my

friend. Have you seen the cover of The New Yorker this week? While I

didn't think it was that funny, it struck a blow for freedom of speech. We

need

more of that and less political correctness.

BTW, I am about the least racist, least bigoted person you'll ever meet, but

I'm sick of being in the only class of people that can be made fun of.

I appreciate your thoughts, and I know your motives are noble. But, for

gosh's sakes, lighten up.

OK. You win. Let's change that to Laverne and Shirley's High Hopes

Ambulance, or, wait, better yet, Wes's Jewish Pay-Up-Front EMS.

Or you can call it Gene and Donn's Mule Driven Cowboy EMS. Or maybe Border

Medifraud Ambulance Specialists. Or Dallas County's 200th EMS Service--We

Specialize in Fraud.

See, I'm an equal opportunity insulter. If a service is on the up and up,

it will be known for that, regardless of who runs it. Trust me. Good news

travels fast.

Now I must go. I have to contact Mr. Cedric Stonehinge, Personal

Representative of Botswana Nkume, deposed King of Kenya, who is holding the

$26,000,000.00 in funds in the King's name, which only I can liberate from the

Bank of

Uganda. I can't wait to get my half.

Respectfully,

What's racial about them? Huh? If my neighbor's name just happens to be

Abdul, does that guarantee he's of a certain race or religion? All that's in

your mind, not mine. How about Bubba? What race is he? How about LeRoy?

What race is he?

You're assigning racial connotations to words based on YOUR prejudices, not

mine. Don't accuse me of racist remarks until you know me. After all, I

didn't drop the bomb like did, now did I? Nor would I.

As a lawyer would say, you are making assumptions not based on evidence.

Although I agree with most of your comments, I would like to remind

you that words like " Abdul and Amahd's Nigerian Ambulance "

Have no place on this list server.

I read and listen to a lot of what you post, and I agree with most of

it. I realize it was a written as a joke yet it send a subtle message

to the young medics that people or persons from another country who

own or operate a company are not to be trusted and they are operating

Subject: Re: Re: County EMS

,

What I was referring to, perhaps maladroitly, is the influx of Africans who

are applying for and receiving licenses for fly-by-night ambulance services.

Ask anybody at DSHS about that. If they were Brazilian, I would have

targeted them. And yes, maybe Chuck Curtis is still around and ready to surface

again with the 1,000th version of SLEAZE EMS.

We need

more of that and less political correctness.

Gene

Bram,

I just want to remind you of Gene's background. He was roaming the earth of EMS

since we were in diapers. He is a true blue person that has got the respect by

some of the biggest names in EMS. He has employed all ethnicity levels in his

different variety of jobs and I personally know of different ethnicity medics

that highly respect him. You are completely missing the point he is trying to

make. All of you that have bashed him are missing the point. He might not have

politically stated it the right way and you can be my guest on disagreeing with

him. Although, you have to understand that Gene has seen radical changes in

EMS, both good, bad, and between. He has taken many EMS company sides in

different situations. He has taught many different people and he has been a

great help in EMS today. I am just trying to tell you unless you have met Gene

in person, and understood the compassion he has for EMS then don't bash him. He

is far from racist and I will back him to the end of the rope with that.

Thank You,

Also as a matter of point the Texas EMS list is NOT a state " run " list.

What I meant to say was a better choice of words could have been

used. I am pretty sure a heck of a lot of people agree with you, and

I am one of them but your choice of words could of been more thought
