Cc: Kristopher Krueger Subject: 2008 Nominations for the Star of Texas Awards The Star of Texas Awards were created by the Texas Legislature to honor the bravery and sacrifice of Texas first responders. The awards are given to each peace officer, firefighter, and emergency medical first responder who was killed or sustained serious injuries in the line of duty on or after September 1, 2003 (Texas Government Code, Chapter 3106). The Governor's Star of Texas Awards Advisory Committees are currently accepting nominations for the 2008 awards. Nominations can be submitted online on the Governor's website at http://www.governor.state.tx.us/divisions/cjd/awards/TexasStarAward/ <http://www.governor.state.tx.us/divisions/cjd/awards/TexasStarAward/> . The submission deadline is July 30, 2008. To be eligible for the 2008 awards, the critical incident must have occurred between September 1, 2003 and June 30, 2008, and the first responder must not have previously received a Star of Texas Award for that particular incident. The Governor's Star of Texas Awards Advisory Committees will review award nominations to ensure that each critical incident meets statutory criteria. The awards will be presented by the Governor or his designee during a ceremony in the fall of 2008. Your assistance in identifying all eligible first responders for these important awards is appreciated. Please feel free to share this information. If you have access to information regarding peace officers, firefighters, or emergency medical first responders who have been killed or seriously injured in the line of duty on or after September 1, 2003 - and particularly during this year's focus eligibility period (from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008) - please contact Dianna Sosa at or dianna.sosa@....
