Guest guest
Hi everyone, Our family is affected by a cold and finally my son has one too. This time he also has fever as high as 101-102 F. His baby sister had two bad days and now she is much better which indicates that it is likely viral. For the last three years, my son had only mild viral infection like symptoms and mostly allergies and fatigue. So should I celebrate that his immune system is getting better? He is on diflucan and vancomycin. I am only using ibuprofen when his fever spikes. Should I pay attention to something else? He started hand flapping this morning (hasn't done it for years). I didn't take him to a pediatrician but was wondering if should I get him evaluated for strep. My daughter is fine today and maybe it is just viral but I don't want to miss strep in my son because of a possible PANDAS issue. Since I have not dealt with an acute respiratory illness in him for the last three years, I thought I will ask all the experienced parents as to what I should be paying attention to and what supps or remedies are a must during this time. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks is
Guest guest
i can only tell you what i would do with my son...i would use natural methods to bring down the fever like cool compresses ect.......something about supressing the immune response makes me nervous in kids with immune disregulation...unless of course it is life threatening...but again only my one opinion. also i dont know how your kid would do with ecinechea but i was reading it is one of the best herbs for active strep....just squirt some in back of throat...also fresh ginger in hot water and lemon with honey (if honey not a problem) if their is no appetitie i would not push it and give fresh juices instead...but you probably know all that stuff....sometimes we forget the simple things... also eculyptus in pot of hot water with towel over head to break up mucous...lots a and c if tolerated... Guest guest
Thanks Channa! I am also holding off using ibuprofen unless I need to. I used the Wet socks technique and it is helping. When the fever breaks, he gets his apetite back. I am also using the homeopathic remedy for cold and flu. I hope more parents will respond regarding the strep test if it is needed at this time or not as I am worried about PANDAS after the episode. is > > i can only tell you what i would do with my son...i would use natural methods to bring down the fever like cool compresses ect.......something about supressing the immune response makes me nervous in kids with immune disregulation...unless of course it is life threatening...but again only my one opinion. > also i dont know how your kid would do with ecinechea but i was reading it is one of the best herbs for active strep....just squirt some in back of throat...also fresh ginger in hot water and lemon with honey (if honey not a problem) > if their is no appetitie i would not push it and give fresh juices instead...but you probably know all that stuff....sometimes we forget the simple things... > also eculyptus in pot of hot water with towel over head to break up mucous...lots a and c if tolerated... > > > ________________________________ > > To: mb12valtrex > Sent: Friday, February 24, 2012 1:10 PM > Subject: Finally a cold with fever?? > > >  > Hi everyone, > Our family is affected by a cold and finally my son has one too. Guest guest
Seconding Channa for her first paragraph. Our pediatrician is against using anything till fever is more than 102F and if its not for more than 2 days. I used to use Acetaminophen but lately I used Belladonna (as DS won't let me sponge him) and it really works. Its homeopathic so I was skeptical but it worked Record fever every 3 hours if possible (and write it down)If its cold then its viral infection, you can't really do much to viral infection.. i can only tell you what i would do with my son...i would use natural methods to bring down the fever like cool compresses ect.......something about supressing the immune response makes me nervous in kids with immune disregulation...unless of course it is life threatening...but again only my one opinion. also i dont know how your kid would do with ecinechea but i was reading it is one of the best herbs for active strep....just squirt some in back of throat...also fresh ginger in hot water and lemon with honey (if honey not a problem) if their is no appetitie i would not push it and give fresh juices instead...but you probably know all that stuff....sometimes we forget the simple things... also eculyptus in pot of hot water with towel over head to break up mucous...lots a and c if tolerated... Guest guest
Thanks Tammy! How do I get my pediatrician to run all these tests? I checked the website but was a little confused as to when the tests should be done. Should they be run when the child is having an acute illness? My dan doesn't believe that my son has PANDAS and only checked the ASO titer and the Dnase B titer and both of them were negative at that time. That doesn't exclude Pandas though. What made me think of Pandas today was the flapping that he started. I have been going a little crazy with everybody being sick in the family and havn't been reading every single thread so missed the post by Ruth. I am hoping that somebody on the forum will be able to educate us on the timing of testing and how to get the pediatrician to order all the tests recommended and how to get the insurance to cover the cost. is > > is, go to pandasnetwork and the pandas Yahoo group and ask there. Guest guest
is - There are many infectious agents that can potentially trigger PANDAS. So, the negative ASO and AntiDnase do not rule out PANDAS. Also, there are many PANDAS kids that, for a variety of reason, do not show high titers when tested. Sometimes there have been many exacerbations and the symptoms are now chronic. Sometimes there is immune deficiency along with the autoimmune component, and the child won't have elevated antibodies. There are more, but you get the idea.I would ask your pediatrician to test for the various bacterial and viral agents that after can become pathogenic in humans. Those would be strep A ( but there can also be other forms of strep), EBV, HHV6, H1N1, CMV, Mycoplasma pneumonia, and lyme (ask for extended western blot). Get both the IgG and the IgM. Here is some information that may be helpful to your pediatrician. http://pandasnetwork.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/2161-0665-2-113.pdfhttp://pandasnetwork.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/2161-0665-2-113.pdfThese are recent research updates on PANDAS that may clarify that there are other infections involved, and that some kids don't have elevated titers. Also, great research paper discussing lyme vs PANDAS. Doctors will almost never think of lyme unless you live in the NE. And even then, they seem to be more aware of the physical symptoms, vs neurological/psychological. Here, also is a link to a great article that just was put out by MSNBC. It is of course, more on the layman's level, and could also be helpful.http://todayhealth.today.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/02/24/10490105-sudden-ocd-in-kids-culprit-may-be-strep-throat-other-infectionsHopefully this will help you to get the testing you need. If not, I second 's recommendation to find a good PANDAS specialist. THere are many parents on the PANDAS Facebook group that could help. I also know of a few of the more well-known docs. WHere do you live?Ruth What state are u in? U need to find a good PANDAS doc. To: mb12valtrex Sent: Saturday, February 25, 2012 12:50 AMSubject: Re: Finally a cold with fever?? Thanks Tammy! Guest guest
I have known my son had PANDAS for a few years based on clinical symptoms and his positive response to treatment. Last year we got a positive test from Dr Cunningham, which I believe they are no longer doing. My son had always had +4 alpha and gamma hemolytic strep in his stool, which parents know is the precursor to PANDAS. We had never, however, had a positive throat culture or even positive anti strep antibodies. As we have long been considering IVIg, yet lacked the documentation our insurance company will want to consider the dx of PANDAS, I asked our DAN to add anti strep antibodies to our list of things we check in our monthly blood draws. After a few months of random testing we finally got out positive documentation. So I would recommend check it often when you are having blood drawn. > > is, go to pandasnetwork and the pandas Yahoo group and ask there. Guest guest
I would let the fever go without treatment unless it becomes dangerously high. I would also give vitamin C and also binders a couple of hours after meds. Do you have modifilan or chlorella? Binders help with hand flapping. Die off can cause the movement of metals. I would start checking for antistrep antibodies in all your blood draws. Have you ever done a CDSA? Any alpha or gamma hemolytic strep? > > Hi everyone, > Our family is affected by a cold and finally my son has one too. This time he also has fever as high as 101-102 F. Guest guest
Thank you Ruth, and Caryn! I had a crazy day with two sick children so couldn't respond promptly. Thank you so much for all the ideas. I took my kids to the pediatrician to at least get the swab test done for strep. Preliminary results were negative but I will get the definitive result tomorrow. The pediatrician was familiar with PANDAS but recommended me to take my son to CHOP to see PANDAS specialist. Caryn, my son did have gamma hemolytic streptococci in his stool CDSA in november 2010 after which he had appendectomy. But the strep was non-pathogenic as per description. At the time, our old dan recommended biocidin liquid which we used for about 2 months. The repeat CDSA didn't show any strep but there was absence of lactobacilli. Ruth, after reading your post and the links that you sent, I am thinking that I will print all the necessary documents and take them to my son's pediatrician and request him to order all the necessary tests. Today it was not possible as it was just a sick visit. At least they are familiar with PANDAS and after I explain my son's symptoms, he will likely order the tests. I cannot wait for CHOP's appointment so I will look for another specialist in the meantime. Thanks is > > > > Hi everyone, > > Our family is affected by a cold and finally my son has one too. Guest guest
is - I think that is a good strategy Hopefully after reading the literature, your doc will be helpful. I wanted you to know that I do not have first-hand knowledge of CHOP, but have heard many parents say they are not helpful with pANDAS. If you decide you need a specialist, (and if you get some positives on your testing, you may), let me know. I can refer you to a doc who is really supportive and knowledgeable - or at least find some parents who know your area well.Hope you are all feeling better soon and i wish you the best in your search.Ruth Thank you Ruth, and Caryn! Guest guest
Hi- I have also heard CHOP is not good for PANDAS. FWIW, my daughter was classic pandas- she has every single pandas symptom- the first dx that ever made any sense- finally. She never has a strep titer raised, nor a positive swab for strep in nearly 5 years. We did the Cam-K test for pandas when it was available, she scored high/severe pandas. We did pandas treatments, always slid back to square 1. We then tested for Lyme and co-infections- positive- in both her and I- can be passed gestational. I believe the strep infection was there in her body, but consider it a co-infection with all the others... Infection based neuro/mental illness. And these infections are horrific, and so difficult to eliminate. Sorry, no Sally Sunshine here. Bad week for both of us, waiting to see new Lyme Dr. next week. If you have a good DAN! Dr. you could make your case for pandas, see if they will give you a trial full dose treatment of Azithromycin or Amox. take copious notes- trial of ibuprofen- this is what we did- first month ever when she was on Azithromycin was WOW- didn't sustain because of all the other infections, but this trial told us where our problems lay. > > > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > Our family is affected by a cold and finally my son has one too. Guest guest
Hi there, I am new to the biomedical world, but we did come back with a 4+ alpha hemolytic strep and 1+ staphylococcus aureus but my Dan never went into what it meant. Guest guest
You need to educate yourself on the symptoms of PANDAS. www.pandasnetowork.org is a great site for info. If you feel your child has PANDAS symptoms find a good doc in your area. Some pediatricians are open to treating PANDAS with a trial of antibiotics......you need to make sure you have the right antibiotic (azithro or augmentin and the correct dose). Generally a longer trial is needed....several weeks to months to get relief. To: mb12valtrex Sent: Sunday, February 26, 2012 9:44 AMSubject: Re: Finally a cold with fever??
