Guest guest
The excellent post comment should go to K. Navarrro. He hit the nail on the head. We definitely cannot always say what's on our mind. Or at least shouldn't. Don His comments: Henry, I checked with the TEXASEMS-L Acceptable Use Guidelines and was astonished (hyperbole) to find out that that absolute openness is not allowed. The list moderators can hold individuals responsible for the words they choose. Gene (like all of us) may have the " freedom " to say anything he chooses but he must also be willing to accept the consequences of exercising that freedom. Exercising political correctness prevents an individual from saying something because it MIGHT be offensive to another. Exercising cultural competence prevents the individual from saying something because IT IS offensive. We should all strive to achieve cultural competence. I do not say many things to my students, my colleagues and the public. I do not refrain from saying those things because someone might be offended. I exercise restraint because they ARE offensive. Whether I agree (or anyone else agrees) that Gene's comment was offensive or not is irrelevant. Some people found Gene's words to be hurtful and offensive. Gene is not a stupid man. He knows the power of the words he chooses. Now, let him accept the consequences of his choice. Guest guest
What Is Political Correctness? Political Correctness (PC) is the communal tyranny that erupted in the 1980s. It was a spontaneous declaration that particular ideas, expressions and behaviour, which were then legal, should be forbidden by law, and people who transgressed should be punished. (see Newspeak) It started with a few voices but grew in popularity until it became unwritten and written law within the community. With those who were publicly declared as being not politically correct becoming the object of persecution by the mob, if not prosecution by the state. Guest guest
Political Correctness: The Scourge of Our Times Agustin Blazquez with the collaboration of Jaums Sutton Monday, April 8, 2002 Does anyone know the origins of Political Correctness? Who originally developed it and what was its purpose? I looked it up. It was developed at the Institute for Social Research in furt, Germany, which was founded in 1923 and came to be known as the " furt School. " It was a group of thinkers who pulled together to find a solution to the biggest problem facing the implementers of communism in Russia. The problem? Why wasn't communism spreading? Their answer? Because Western Civilization was in its way. What was the problem with Western Civilization? Its belief in the individual, that an individual could develop valid ideas. At the root of communism was the theory that all valid ideas come from the effect of the social group of the masses. The individual is nothing. And they believed that the only way for communism to advance was to help (or force, if necessary) Western Civilization to destroy itself. How to do that? Undermine its foundations by chipping away at the rights of those annoying individuals. Guest guest
Opening the door..... no cost. Poking somebody with a stick.... no cost. Standing back and watching a whole bunch of people spin themselves into the ground.... Priceless. Well done, . >>> " Henry Barber " 7/23/2008 1:46 PM >>> Political Correctness: The Scourge of Our Times Agustin Blazquez with the collaboration of Jaums Sutton Monday, April 8, 2002 Does anyone know the origins of Political Correctness?
