Where do you get the custom blend? thanks.

Re: My son's doing awesome on NAC/// amino acid questions!!

We use a custom blend based on my son's test results. I can't begin to tell you how much better he is. It may not only be this, of course. We'll get the results of his latest tests next month.

Your doc usually writes a script and you have it compounded at a compounding pharmacy.  We had the option of doing this but some of the aminos suggested, our compounding pharmacy wasn't able to supply (like threonine).  Not sure why but, here in Canada, there are some stupid restrictions about supplements (we have this same issue with carnitine, which makes it very hard for me to buy ALC and LC -- I usually have to ask for it and it's kept behind the counter and only supplement stores that know me from buying a whole heap of stuff all the time will sell it to me).  I think threonine might be restricted here in the same way carnitine is.

" THEY " are trying to pass similar restrictions in the USA. :-(

Thanks for the information. We've used 2 general brands in the past and they didn't help much. maybe compounding them would be more helpful. we were pretty much low across the board so maybe somethiong else is also needed. It's so aggravating to hear about restrictions like that.

You guys, what amino acids are you giving and what are the negatives or *backfiring* you mention to look for, and what then do you do? I think our 4.5 ds asd/adhd is responding beautifully to lysine, but some times its out of the blue defiance, aggression......and I really don't know how much is not safe! Any thoughts on anything, and thank you!!AlisabethSent from my HTC on the Now Network from Sprint!----- Reply message -----From: w3m1@...Date: Sat, Sep 17, 2011 8:48 amSubject: Re: My son's doing awesome on NAC/// amino acid questions!!To: <mb12valtrex > Where do you get the custom blend? thanks. What makes you think defiance and aggression is related to aminos?

I have given lysine in 500mg doses. The tablets were pretty big so I broke them down into capsules. They do make a powder too... anyway, I have moved away from using lysine. :-)The aminos I use routinely are carnitine and carnosine. I also use GABA which is sometimes considered an amino acid and also taurine. Carnitine and Carnosine are the only aminos I can think of that I give everyday.

I do try to make sure they get a decent amt of protein though. I use Mix1 protein drinks from Publix. They are whey-derived but are low enough in casein to be called " casein-free. "

Maia's amino profile recommended that we need both lysine and arginine (there's a balancing relationship between lysine and arginine -- they both tend to either lower the other and you need both to maintain a balance).  Unless you're using lysine to fight hepatitis, using lysine only in the long term might create an imbalance.  I made that mistake supplementing lysine without arginine and we found ourselves with some imbalance.  Right now, I'm giving about 750 mg of arginine with about 1000 mg of lysine to balance things out.

The " problems " created by NAC that I'm talking about is the disappearance of mucous.  NAC breaks up mucous (it's often used to treat patients with cystic fibrosis, too, because of its ability to break up mucous).  When taken orally, (and seriously, I just learned this this week), it breaks up mucous in various parts of the body...specifically, the digestive system and organs like the liver.  The mucous lining is used to protect the organs and to protect the gut from:

a) being leaky (the mucous lining prevents food particulates from leaking through)B) and it protect the gut from absorbing more oxalates.I'm definitely seeing indications of a leakier gut with Maia.  She doesn't have issues with milk but after being on NAC for just over a week, I started seeing mucous in her urine. She also showed decrease in appetite while she was on NAC and I saw the leaky gut resurface (in the form of the milk protein once again leaking from the gut).

How I'm thinking to backtrack here and to fix the mucous layer...Threonine was another amino acid in our profile that was recommended.  I've been hearing about someone using threonine to repair this mucous layer.  Although I suspect that this is another one that I may need to be careful with, because we don't want too much mucous in the body (because too much of anything can be a bad thing) -- but threonine is an amino acid that's known to help the body produce mucous. It may be good that I supplement that first before even thinking about adding any cysteine to the equation because because any cysteine (and glutathione, for that matter) breaks up mucous.

Mucous is really imporant.  Right now, I'm thinking about all the things that could have been damaged because of a threonine deficiency that led to insufficient mucous in the body.  I can see this as a source of many of the things that affect Maia (i.e. visual stims, digestion, oxalates, some degree of liver functions, and other things I probably can't think of off the top of my head right now).

I have threonine on order right now and waiting for it to get here.  Our amino profile also suggested it and now that I do (somewhat) understand what it does, I'm a bit antsy about getting it and I really want to try it.

I was thinking back to this discussion about supplementing lysine.I was just reading through the supplements section in Amalgam Illness and Cutler's saying that Arginine is actually an essential amino acid for children.  While arginine does promote the replication of viruses, it's also needed to keep bacteria in check because it helps the system to fight bacteria.

I remember a discussion that had gone on in a group (I don't remember which group now) but we were talking about having to treat bacteria, viruses, and yeast all at the same time or else you find yourself on that yeast/bacterial/viral merry-go-round we're all too familiar with.

>>I think our 4.5 ds asd/adhd is responding beautifully to lysine, but

some times its out of the blue defiance, aggression......and I really

don't know how much is not safe! I think what might be happening is that the lysine is depleting arginine (it's known higher levels of either will deplete the other).  I'm thinking that while you're successfully fighting the herpes with lysine, the arginine levels are falling (not sure if you are supplementing arginine with the lysine) -- and whatever bacteria that shouldn't have been there is flaring.  (I say don't let this ride out like I did -- I'm dealing with some heavy duty emotional regulation issues right now, stemming from bacteria issues, I think).  I'm thinking that his out of the blue defiance and aggression are from bacteria?
