Fight to stay a separate city entity. EMS and FD's don't work. It is a major

power stuggle and EMS will always be inferior.

city of burnet did same thing and FD gets everything and EMS is like the

stepchild , not a good ideal.

City EMS consolidating with City FD

At a recent City council meeting the Mayor proposed our EMS Dept. and

Fire Dept. join as one. Our major concern is that the FD is civil

service and EMS is not. I am aware that the City of Brownsville was

able to combine the two entities some years back. I was wondering if

anyone out there has encountered the same opportunity. Any and all

input as to the procedure(s) we will need to follow will be greatly

appreciated.

You need to find out, and I realize there are probably political issues

involved, why the issue is being brought up.  I'll send you something off-list

for consideration if I can find it; if not, I'll paraphrase it and get it to

you.

The consolidation of EMS and fire is a horrible idea. The only benifit may be

the funding. It is a rough being a paramedic in a fire department because you

may find yourself on the ambulance and never on the engine, depending on the

size of the department.

The same is true the other way too. You may be forced to ride an engine so many

shifts a month. As much as a shock this will be to some people, there are

paramedics who have no desire to be on an engine.

That's the problem in a nut shell!

Most folks prefer one over the other I'm one of the weirdos that played both

sides and actually made it work!

The mistake comes from shoving it down the throat one way or the other. If not

even made worse when it is shove up another appendage.

Combo systems can work but too often they get mired in the bs of the us versus

them game.

I've heard that in some instances the department's career ladder was

entrenched on the fire side with no comparable career ladder/salary

steps for the EMS side. (I think it was in NY, but I could be wrong.) If

you started out on the big red trucks, you could get promoted up the

ranks. If you started on the ambulance, you stayed on the ambulance.

You have to make sure there is parity between the two sides of the

house.

Philly had that problem in the early days of EMS.

Guys would fail the Paramedic exam to be able to sit for the Lieutenants exam

for the fact there were all of 5 Medic Lieutenant slots and none above. They

fixed it in the 90's

After reading all the replies you have received on this topic, I don't

think there is more that can be written. What you and your leaders

should do is visit some of these organizations and see how they work,

talk to their crews and take notes on what they would have done

differently. We would be more than happy to have visitors here to look

over our system.

Our City actually 'absorbed' ambulance services into the fire

department in 1971. Before then, private services responded to calls

and it was not reliable. Since then, we have worked very hard to make

EMS part of the role our firefighters perform, as is rescue, Haz Mat,

ARFF, etc. After all these years, there are still problems we are

resolving, but I think our department has done a better job than most

other fire services in incorporating EMS as part of our service.

If you would like to come visit us or call, we'd be happy to give you

the good and bad issues we have had to deal with over the years.
