Guest guest
I don't know of anybody here who does blood draws in the field except the cops, and they just got themselves into a giant battle over it. A big bunch of cases got thrown out. When I first became a paramedic almost 30 years ago, we were drawing blood in the field. The hospitals would dump them right into the trash in front of us. Why would anybody need to do blood draws in the field today? Some folks want LE ordered blooddraws to be done in Texas. Don't let that happen. The cops are finding it's not the cure they thought it would be. Guest guest
Blood draws are in our protocol as we provide treatment to the patient. We DO NOT do blood draw for Law Enforcement, and they do not ask us to. Blood tubes are labeled by EMS and provided to the ED upon arrival at the hospital. Lab will gather them for processing. If LE desires results, they follow legal procedure to obtain results from the hospital. If LE wants there own tube to be drawn, this is done by lab personnel at the ED after the patient has been delivered by EMS. How many services are doing blood draws with a butterfly? We do not use a butterfly needle. Blood draw is accomplished through the IV cath with a Vacutainer system. The local hospital lab requests the order of tubes to be red, blue, green, purple. I do not know the reasoning, unless it has to do with the anticoagulants or other agents contained in the tubes. How many services are having their blood accepted by the ED's? The local hospital does accept our draws and is appreciative of having the tubes ready to send to lab. When we started our blood draws, we involved the local lab director to learn his preferences and the hospital furnishes the tubes. As far as I know, the surrounding hospitals also utilize our blood draws. How many services are drawing blood through the IV start? If we do a blood draw, it is drawn through the IV cath as described above. How many services are drawing blood through needle and hub system? Our vacutainer locks to the cath hub. , Director Seminole EMS Seminole, TX blood draws in the pre-hospital setting I am starting a research project on blood draws in the pre-hospital setting. Guest guest
At Acadian, we carry Vacutainers and the slip tip collection adapters for drawing blood from the catheter hub. I typically draw a rainbow of blood tubes with every IV start. The local hospitals in southwest Louisiana greatly appreciate the blood, and willingly accept it. That said, it's not required of us. It's simply a courtesy, and most of our medics don't bother. If I can do it without delaying care, and the hospitals appreciate it, I figure, why not? -- Grayson, CCEMT-P www.kellygrayson.com
Guest guest
At my service, we draw the standard rainbow blood tubes through the iv catheter with the needless luer lock adapter that the city provides us. I do it as a courtesy, but if I can't get the blood, than I don't bother with it. As far as hospitals accepting EMS blood, from my experience the local hospitals with the exception of one accept EMS blood and is greatly appreciative with the exception of a few major hospitals in the medical center, they just throw it away. However, on night shift, there will sometimes be a few nurses that accept our blood, but not all of the time. > > Blood draws are in our protocol as we provide treatment to the patient. Guest guest
We do not have blood draw in our routine protocol. In our response area's we have 7 hospitals that we do transports to and at least 3 different tube configurations that these hospitals use. Only about 50% of the time is EMS blood going to be accepted so the expence is not justifiable. NOW from a teaching standpoint I have always opted to teach all methods. Not every student will be my employee and not teaching all methods to me is leaving your studnets with a less than needed education 23 yrs ago drawing blood was routine but now it is not so much at least in our area. I still though remember watching it all go into a sharps container and wondering why we even bothered. Just my thought For what its worth Terrell EMT-P CC...,...,...,.,....( all the other things that still mean I am a paramedic)
