is NPD part of BPD or are they distinct disorders?

i think my question is debatable. i'm not looking for a debate, though. it's

just that my mom meets all the NPD criteria (although she can certainly fake her

way thru the lack of empathy bit). and she meets a lot of the BPD (waif/queen),

too.

so it leaves me wondering if these are so close that maybe they are just

variations of the same. sort of a continuum of personality disorders.

learning...

If Annie were around she'd go into depth, but the long and short of it is that

these personality disorders overlap greatly. So much in fact that a person can

have both full blown NPD and BPD at the same time. So it's quite possible that

your mother has both NDP and BPD. They share a lot of characteristics too, so as

they overlap, it's not uncommon for someone to have both. I think my nada is BPD

and NPD and histrionic PD too.

Cassie,

I don't think the various cluster B personality disorders are

totally separate from each other. I think they're different

aspects of the same general type of problem, perhaps all caused

by similar mis-wiring of or damage to the brain. Many people who

have symptoms of one have symptoms of more than one of them. BPD

and NPD are commonly found together as far as I can tell. My

nada certainly has aspects of both.

My T told me just today that my nada has at least 2 diagnoses - NPD and BPD

for starters. She said tons and tons of narcissim.

It makes me confused to figure out a BPD w/o the narc tendencies - because I

see narc habits and I RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN away, but I can be tricked by the

waifs and hermits
