That would be me.  Hello to all!  As my intro says I was recently dx, as in on Thursday, with MS.  I currently have swelling on my brain stem so they are telling me to get steroid infusions so I am curious how this is going to make me feel and will it bring back things I have lost?  My only symptoms is some generalized weakness  in my arms and most notably downbeat nystagmus that I have had since March.  I am trying to focus on my dx but honestly, all I can see right now is that I was supposed to be getting gastric bypass surgery soon.  My husband had it in July, and I was going to stagger mine and have it now.  So, now he is thin and gorgeous and I am not and now I am sick.  I haven't talked to my gastric dr yet but my head tells me that I should not mess with anything about myself now.  I know that I am in denial about all of this right now and I can't really read too much because I don't know if it even relates to me at all since this is my first attack.  (I might have had some before because I know right after my youngest was born about 7 years ago, I developed a " twitch " that starts in my neck and goes down my spine, out my leg and my big toe on my right side.  It is not positional and happens a few times a day if at all)  Who knows?  Anyway, my immediate plan is to start weight watchers on Monday and try to get healthier through good nutrition and exercise until I get a new plan.

I was just dx and yes I have swelling on my brainstem currently. I am actually at the hospital getting my first steroid infusion right now. They don't have me on any other mess right now. I guess what he meant was getting the swelling under control etc. Manage the MS? I actually don't know what they actually meant. My gastric bypass dr is going to conference on my case tomorrow so I guess I will know more then about how safe they think it is. Sent from my iPhone

Well, I am generally a really positive person and so I am feeling ok but sad.  What is really affecting me is how much this is tearing up my best friend and my family members.  I never really thought about my my illness affecting everyone around me.

For me also, I have been saying for quite awhile now " something is not right " but my symptoms have been so vague really and not really anything a person couldn't live with - more annoying.  The weakness in my arms and hands I just figured was because I was getting older and difficulty in moving in and out of bed on my hands and knees I thought I was just too damn fat to be holding myself up anymore.  I never really thought that it wasn't normal.   The excruciating pain I would get down my right leg I just figured was my sciatica that I had problems with when I was preg - and again - that I was just too damn fat.  The nerve twitch that started in my neck and shot down my back, down my right hip and left out my big toe I just thought was a result of a spinal block I had when my daughter was born via - csection and they just hit a nerve.   So until my jiggly eyes I had an explanation for everything.  And the only reason I was persistent about figuring out why my eyes were jiggling was because I was going to have gastric bypass surgery and I had a bad feeling about my eyes doing that and thinking maybe there was something going on in my brain.

Mostly what goes through my head is that my mom was in terrible pain (fibromyalgia?) and problems with her eyes (multiple retinal detachments) in her mid 50's and in the end went crazy.  She ended up killing herself because she couldn't live in the pain.  And my biggest " fear " in life is that I would turn out just like her.  So, now my biggest fear seems like it could be a reality and I also think I have SO much that I want to do in my life and I don't really have time to not be active.  I run several successful self-made businesses that I have grown from 0 up and I have 2 kids that I want to devote everything to.  I also have a skinny husband that I want to match up to as planned and travel the world.  I am sure everyone feels that way - they just don't have time for this illness.  lol

family and friends react much as others react to cancer or death - some can handle it and some can't

in my blood family I have at least 3 cousins with fibromyalgia - and a few of their kids - only I didn't know it until after I was diagnosed in 2004

I had my first MS/fibro flare two weeks after my 17th birthday the week between Christmas and New Years in 1965 - I wasn't diagnosed with the fibro until July 2004 and the MS in November 2004 - I was 55 years old

in my family they ignore reality and keep telling me I have been a hypochondriac or just say I am too lazy to do something

my heart family is more supportive - 2 heart sister have fibro - and coached me through it - one doesn't but she did the research when I couldn't - thank you Patti

if fibro is in the family the odds are there is MS somewhere - finally they figured out they are both nerve disorders

I am proud to say that my two grand dogs - giant schnausers - have never knocked me on my rear or off the back porch - they do lean on me - but I can handle that

Well, I am generally a really positive person and so I am feeling ok but sad. What is really affecting me is how much this is tearing up my best friend and my family members. I never really thought about my my illness affecting everyone around me.

For me also, I have been saying for quite awhile now "something is not right" but my symptoms have been so vague really and not really anything a person couldn't live with - more annoying. So until my jiggly eyes I had an explanation for

everything.

And my biggest "fear" in life is that I would turn out just like her. I am sure everyone feels that way - they just don't have time for this illness. lol

Dear I am so glad you found us, but sorry you needed to:) Wow, you were JUST dxed! How are you feeling about everything?I think you are right and you should have surgery right now. Any stresses can bring about a worsening of MS and surgery would be a stress for sure. Good luck with Weight Watchers! big hugs to you!

I know that I am in denial about all of this right now and I can't really read too much because I don't know if

it even relates to me at all since this is my first attack. (I might have had some before because I know right after my youngest was born about 7 years ago, I developed a "twitch" that starts in my neck and goes down my spine, out my leg and my big toe on my right side. It is not positional and happens a few times a day if at all) Who knows? Anyway, my immediate plan is to start weight watchers on Monday and try to get healthier through good nutrition and exercise until I get a new plan.

Dear Sadness over the diagnosis sounds pretty normal to me. When I was first dxed I was happy to finally have a name for what was going on with my body but I was sad to have that dx. Sad and happy at the same time sounds pretty crazy, doesn't it? lol Your story sounds a lot like mine.... I had sciatica, fatigue, pain, "nerve" problems, etc. At least now you have a name for your symptoms, huh? Most people with MS live long, relatively healthy lives and still walk. That's the majority! Hang in there---you will be fine. I'm sure of it!hugs SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. Welcome to the family . You can't help but be down and sad. Getting the dx is life changing. I knew something was wrong for years too between my first attack in 1979 and finally being diagnosed two years ago with now spms and fibro. Years of "you're so lazy", "it's all in your head",etc. I had guessed ms back in 79 but considering there was no treatment then, I was left to believe it was a 'virus'. Believe me finding out I have it at 60 really blew my mind .... I was depressed as h*ll.

Be kind to yourself, even selfish if you need it for a bit. It's a lot to take in and you're right, it affects everyone in the family. I don't know how old your kids are but they can learn to understand and even help. That's part of being a family afterall .... gentle hugs, Cait
