Guest guest
I'm sorry, this has nothing to do with anything, but I have to vent to *someone* WHY is it that people seem so incapable of correctly utilizing the word "THAW"? They say "I have to unthaw the chicken" That means you have to FREEZE it! If it is *already* frozen, then you have to THAW it! And I just heard someone say they have to defrost the food...you defrost the FREEZER, not the FOOD! Why can't people get that right? It isn't rocket science! Now back to your regularly scheduled life.... Guest guest
Many of the newer microwave ovens have a Defrost option. Mine actually uses the word "defrost" and in a sense, that is what is happening. The ice/frost is being removed from the frozen object. The dictionary also has 4 entries for defrost as a verb. Two of these entries are defrost as a verb used with an object and there are two entries with defrost used as a verb without an object. Entry number 4 says that defrost means to thaw as in The meat took 2 hours to defrost. Having said that, I have never heard anybody use the word, "unthaw". But, I have heard more than one person use the word, "defrost" in referring to thawing food items. So, I sit here and think about the terminology that I use. Hmmm... Well, I will let a frozen chicken thaw out in the refrigerator, or I will put it in the microwave oven and use the auto-defrost. So, I use both to mean the same thing. Guest guest
I understand... I can have a fit over people using words the wrong way too. Especially when it's people who gets paid to use words (like journalists etc.), today even they treat language with complete nonchalance and ignorance. My number one annoyance is people using the word "data" (it's the same word in Swedish as in English) in Swedish, when they mean to say or write "dator" (="computer", but literally means "machine [or other agent] working with data"). Yes, sure, the words are similar, but certainly not identical even in spelling and pronunciation, and everything but identical in meaning. In fact, if you will, the "secret key" to their similarity is precisely in their different (but related) meanings. I've had people (quite often) try to sell me a "data table" (what they mean is a "computer table", of course). And if you answer with something like "Interesting! And what kind of data would you store on that table, and in what format?" you'd usually get just a blank stare.I try to tell the young students (as often as I can...) that using the word "data" for "dator" is a swift and effective way of demonstrating that you understand the meaning of neither one nor the other...Oh, well, getting off my language soap box now...love/Reb >> I'm sorry, this has nothing to do with anything, but I have to vent to> *someone* > WHY is it that people seem so incapable of correctly utilizing the word > THAW"? > They say "I have to unthaw the chicken" That means you have to FREEZE it!
