Guest guest
hello everyone, I live in brooklyn,ny in a poor community the pharamcy i go to is a little hole in the wall. and they act like this all my problem. last week on the 14th of july my lantus cartride the five pack, and the novolog flexpen prefilled syringes got freezen by my refrigertor. I live in low income housing and mangament doesn't want to pay for the med's I had to throw out. Then I go to my phamacy and they tell me that medicaid willn't pay for my new replacement insulins because i just got the the insulin that was freezen two weeks ago. I have to wait at lease another week or so. However i have about a few days left of the novolog flexpen and I have less than half a 10ml vial left of the lantus with particles in it. So I asked my phamacit how much would it cost to buy my med's he wouldn't give me a price and said it cost to much. I need help can anyone tell if i can take my refills i have left to a new phamacy? or how do I go about buying my insulin online and do they take mediciad? Basically the phamacy want me to get so sick with the high blood sugar that I have to be admitted to the hospital again. Shalene

Guest guest
Shalene, Just a quick question. Why was your insulin in the freezer? Guest guest
I would call the Dr and ask them what to do. You need to have the insulin! Maybe they have samples or maybe they can rewrite your prescription to allow for more in a month. I know I went to the pharmacy to pick up my son's insulin one day and they said the insurance wouldn't pay for it b/c we had just bought some 2 wks ago. And we hadn't frozen any or lost or broke any bottles even....(which happens all the time, I'm sure)...so I had to call the Dr and have them call in a new prescription....he uses 4 vials (5 if you count the humalog too) of insulin a month and the first prescription was for 3 of them. If that doesn't work, try going to another pharmacy and see if you can get the prescriptions filled there. There must be another pharmacy around that will be more helpful and you can switch all your meds to that one. Even if you have to pay out of pocket for some to get you thru until medicaid will pay for more, another pharmacy should be more helpful. Unfortunately, your housing management probably has no legal obligation to replace the insulin. Equipment does break down and unless you could prove that they were negligent, it's simply an unfortunate incident. The pharmacy is probably not replacing it because your insurer's (Medicaid) computer system says that it is not time for a refill... so going to another pharmacy won't help as they all access the same authorization system for Medicaid. Possibly, you could have your doctor prescribe a different insulin (i.e. Novolin NPH) to be a temporary replacement for the Lantus. It isn't as affective and would require probably 2 injections daily, but as it's a 'new' prescription it may make it past Medicaid's computer system. And, if it doesn't a vial is going to be about half the cash price of Lantus (ballpark... a vial would be probably $35). While it's not a perfect solution, it should be manageable on a temporary basis until you can get a refill of Lantus, and less expensive than purchasing Lantus for the cash price. Guest guest
Barbie, She's on Medicaid and they limit how much you can have in a month. That's a good idea about her talking to her dr. The reason I asked why her insulin was in the freezer is b/c insulin is not supposed to be frozen so was curious to know why it was in the freezer.
