I've looked at the DSHS and the NR page a bit and can't seem to find the

information I'm looking for.? Does anyone know the procedure for a currently

licensed/certified Texas paramedic to obtain their National Registry?

Thanks,

How long have you been out of school is the first question and if that's

longer than 2 years from your initial program then you would need to

complete a paramedic refresher class to be eligible to sit for NR testing.

Here you go Wes...............

(Source: http://www.nremt.org/EMTServices/reg_para_history.asp)

All individuals applying for NREMT-Paramedic certification must meet the

following requirements to be eligible for national certification:

1. Applicant must be 18 years of age or older.

2. Current National Registry or state certification at the EMT-Basic,

EMT-Intermediate/85 or EMT-Intermediate/99 level.

3. Successful completion of a state-approved EMT-Paramedic

educational program, within the past two (2) years, that equals or

exceeds the behavioral objectives of the EMT-Paramedic National

Standard Curriculum as developed and promulgated by the U.S.

Department of Transportation.

If the candidate's initial EMT-Paramedic educational program was

completed more than two (2) years ago and the candidate has

maintained state certification at the EMT-Paramedic level, the

candidate must submit documentation verifying completion of a

current EMT-Paramedic refresher-training program within the past

two (2) years.

If the candidate's initial EMT-Paramedic educational program was

completed more than two (2) years ago and the candidate has not

maintained state certification at the EMT-Paramedic level, the

candidate should refer to the " NREMT-Paramedic Re-entry Policy "

section on this page.

If the candidate's initial EMT-Paramedic education program was

completed more than two (2) years ago and the candidate had never

gained state certification at the EMT-Paramedic level, the

candidate must complete a new, state-approved EMT-Paramedic

educational program prior to application.

4. Truthfully complete the Licensing Action and Felony Statements on

the application and supply the documentation if necessary.

5. Possess current CPR credential at the healthcare provider or

equivalent level.

6. Successful completion of the NREMT-Paramedic cognitive and

psychomotor examinations.

Wes, it's in the NREMT's pages.

Set up a NREMT account online. Fill out the application. It requires you

to furnish proof of having completed a NREMT Paramedic Refresher within the

last two years. Send them that, and also send them a copy of your Texas

certificate/license. Pay your money. You'll receive a letter of

authorization to

take the exam.

I read on the TDSHS website that if you chose to renew you state

certification through national registry, and you fail, you can not

change the way you recertify. Meaning once you take the test, that you

have to pass the test to recerify. Am I understanding that correctly?

So, can I chose another recertification option and just try to take the

national registry test anyway, but not use it as my recertification option?

Would

I still have to pass it or have my paramedic status taken from me?

Sorry to be so confused, but I keep getting different answers from everyone!

That is a NR thing -- should you choose to recertify your National

Registry by examination, you get one chance. If you fail, you have to go

through the refresher and all that jazz.

That is a good question. I think the Texas recertification options are a

bit outdated now, because you can now Re-Register by Examination for the

National Registry, where you get only *1 attempt*, and if you fail, you

have to do the refresher and CE. If you pass, then you just check Option

#3 on your renewal application for DSHS and report your current National

Registry number and expiration date.

Option 1 was an option given by DSHS back before NR would let you

re-register by examination -- because they just started doing that

within the past year.

So, NR gives you one shot at the exam, then requires refresher + CE,

whereas DSHS says if you go that route, you can ONLY re-certify by exam,

and you get multiple tries.

-- given this conflict, I would suggest you contact DSHS

directly for guidance......

I used this method to recertify this time, and it was great actually. The

application was MUCH shorter and easier to complete. The only ISSUE I had was

trying to get into a local test on dates I had available because they were full.

However, once I got in, the test went " short and sweet " and I was done. It was

actually more painless to recertify through this method (since I am comfortable

taking tests online) than any other method I have used so far.
