Let me see if I can help explain your question concerning recertification

because I think Texas is quite progressive in allowing options for

recertification. I like to believe the NR began allowing a recertification exam

as an option because we were using an exam successfully in Texas for some

candidates as Jane mentioned in her post.

The NR allows you to recertify by exam if you are currently nationally

registered, If you choose to recertify with the NR using their recertification

exam then you would recertify with the state of Texas using Option 3 since you

would have met their requirements for recertification and have a current NR

card.

Now lets say you DO NOT have a current NR Card and you would like to sit for an

exam rather than doing the required CE or attending a recertification course

then you can use Texas recertification Option 1 which will allow you to take the

NR Assessment exam (not their Recertification exam) and you can have up to three

opportunities to successfully pass this exam.

I think we realized in Texas some years ago that one boot does not fit all (in

some cases) now the rest of the Nation is beginning to realize it too.

That is a good question. I think the Texas recertification options are a

bit outdated now, because you can now Re-Register by Examination for the

National Registry, where you get only *1 attempt*, and if you fail, you

have to do the refresher and CE. If you pass, then you just check Option

#3 on your renewal application for DSHS and report your current National

Registry number and expiration date.

Option 1 was an option given by DSHS back before NR would let you

re-register by examination -- because they just started doing that

within the past year.

So, NR gives you one shot at the exam, then requires refresher + CE,

whereas DSHS says if you go that route, you can ONLY re-certify by exam,

and you get multiple tries.

-- given this conflict, I would suggest you contact DSHS

directly for guidance......

I'd echo what Maxie said in that several states are modifying the ways they are

allowing re certification to be accomplished to more of a Chinese Menu approach.

I my self used the NREMT re certification via exam as well as Option 3 on my

Texas certification last year. I did so more out of a desire to see how the new

CBT process and test worked from NREMT.

It was more for that than any other reason but I would do it again in a

heartbeat.

Texas is very progressive in this regard.

Thanks for you help...however, I am still confused. If I just take the

national registry test, but use CE hours to recerify my state

certification, and do not ass my state certification, no matter how

many trys, will my state certification be taken from me since I did not

pass?
