Guest guest
Has anyone tried to make jerky with a gas grill? We love jerky but it's too hot/humid in the summer here to keep the oven on. We have a small slaughter house/butcher a few miles from my house and sometimes they make their own jerky. Sometimes it's beef and sometimes it's buffalo. Both are delicious. Also, has anyone tried the protein bars made by the South Beach Diet? One bar has @ 18 grams of carbs. A lot less carbs than Glucerna bars and they're cheaper. > > Jerky, is dried cured meat. Guest guest
my gas grill burns everything so I wouldn't trust it with jerky, but back when I was a kid & we made jerky, we saved the prepared pieces (cut, patted dry, marinated) in the freezer until the weather was chilly enough to want the heat on in the am but didn't need to turn the furnace on or build a fire for all day. by running the stove overnight the house wouldn't get chilled. the jerky would have a slightly more brittle texture than the batches we made without freezing the meat. This was also something we did if there wasn't enough from one butchering for a full batch of jerky. For racks we just washed down the regular oven racks & laid the meat straight on, and made sure the foil in the bottom of the stove was relatively new - more for our own benefit than the jerky's (lol) beth > Re: Snacking - Jerky > > > Has anyone tried to make jerky with a gas grill? Guest guest
A gas grill is to hot. It would cook the meat, not dry it. There are outdoor smokers that are good for jerky. Guest guest
I've gotten the free extend bars (promotion in mail someone on this list suggested) and they havbe 21 carbs and first ingredient is soy. neither has been good for me in the past so I am not sure whether or not to try it. The leaflet that comes with it explains how to subtract this and that to get to 2-3 carbs, but I freak when my blood sugars go up. I'm willing to try the soy again (IBS issues which just may have been cleared up with this diabetic healthy diet I'm on now ) but I am worried about the carbs. Also I bought a couple of other quick bars but they have even more carbs although they say it doesn't matter. it doesn't seem like a snack to me, it is more of a meal (41 carbs!) and 210 or something calories but the volume isn't enough to make a meal for me and I just know it will leave me hungry. I seem to be loosing weight again, thank goodness, and I don't want anything to stop that process! I am doing more physical stuff than I have in years which I know is making me more hungry for real not emotional and so far I've been okay by saying to myself " that is NOT how you loose weight' and it has been working. I wish I could bring myself to try these snacks - they are CHOCOLATE!!!!! Judith > I have tried the South Beach Diet bars. I was glad to have them these past > few days. Guest guest
There is the Luhr Jensen Little Chief electric smoker that does great jerky. They go for around $60. Cheaper for used ones on e-bay, but the shipping gets a little high there. in Portland OR RE: Snacking - Jerky A gas grill is to hot. It would cook the meat, not dry it. Guest guest
, Thanks! My husband's 50th is on the first and you just gave me a great idea of what to get him. He never wants anything so I try to find him things that he can use. I forgot that he showed some interest in a smoker some time back. He enjoys jerky as much as I do:) > > There is the Luhr Jensen Little Chief electric smoker that does great jerky. They go for around $60. Guest guest
I went to cabelas.com and there is a section about making jerky. They sell a 3 tier rack for the oven under 30 dollars too. Go take a look. I have had a Ronco dehydrator for many years and I have used it to make fruit lather and beef jerky for the boys to take to scout camp or canoe trips in Québec. le

Guest guest
I never would have guessed that so many people made their own jerky. It never occurred to me that it wasn't just something you bought at the Qwik Mart, along with the Slim Jims. I'd like to try some home made jerky some day. _._,___ __________________________________________________
Guest guest
$4.89 for 4 oz of jerky at Qwik Mart is a very expensive snack. I usually buy a 8 or 10 lbs bottom round at $1.39 to $1.59 a lb. and make the whole thing jerky. $15.90 for 100 oz that is $1.59 an oz. In hunting season I usually get a deer from someone who likes to hunt but does not want to butcher. Then I have jerky for very little expense. Guest guest
$0.16 an oz you mean? $1.59/oz is more expensive than buying the premade stuff lol I had deer jerky a long time ago. It was quite good. I quite enjoy jerky, but, as you said, it's fairly expensive to buy ready-made. I've wanted to get a dehydrator for a while, but it's not a necessary expense, so it's one I haven't been able to justify yet.
