Guest guest
Kim, Have you had your thyroid checked? A problem with the thyroid can affect the ability to lose weight and get your Diabetes under control. Whatever it is you are dealing with right now is definitely not in your head. I'm basing that on what you are saying to us. Guest guest
Hi Kim, Based on this and your last email to the group, I think you might want to ask your doctor about PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrom). I, too, had all of the symptoms of diabetes except the weight loss. I think part of my body's resistance to losing weight is b/c of the possibility of having PCOS. I haven't gotten an official answer about whether I have it or not yet - waiting on my gyno appointment in September - but since starting on Metformin (Glucophage) a month ago, I am feeling overall better. Do you have a home testing meter? If not, it's a worthwhile investment even if you are " only " insulin resistant. Often, pharmacies give the meters free when you buy test strips. If so, what have your numbers been like? Aly
Guest guest
Kim, Yes, there is a definite link. I had PCOS and didn't know it until one of my cysts grew to the size of a healthy newborn. I also had problems with PMS and was on Prozac for a few years. I ended up having a hysterectomy and have been on hormone therapy since then. Since my operation I have no longer needed Prozac but my weight ballooned an additional 80 lbs. over the past 4 years. The endo that I was sent to after being diagnosed with diabetes is a specialist in the link between PCOS and diabetes at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). I cannot remember his last name at this time, I will look it up for you and you can pull up the EVMS website and read an article he wrote on this issue. I exercise almost daily and watch what I eat but I still cannot lose the weight. My thyroid has been tested and even though it's a little off, it's not enough to be the sole cause. The majority of female relatives on my father's side are also obese and have the same health issues as myself. I know it is extremely depressing to not be able to lose the weight. Doctor told me I can either be overweight and unhealthy or I can exercise and be overweight and healthy. It's my choice. > > Hi Everyone, > Kim here just checking in.
