Hi cathy, I don't think my girl is having Pica cause she's not eating and

swallowing non food stuffs. She's just somehow obsessed with tying or wrapping

hair around objects(chewed up into small compacted paper ball now). She used to

pull her own hair put them into her mouth and tie stuffs with the wet hair. I

had to cut her hair vey short. Then she found interest in tying stuffs with fine

sewing threats(that's fine with me). But then she lost interest in the threats

(I quess that it was not challenging enough for her), she started picking up

long hair on the floor putting into her mouth to wet the hair then go around

looking for paper to chew up so she can do the tying. She does this all day and

everyday. Ocd is in my thought right now, but how do I treat the problem? Help

please everyone. ThanksB Dad

Do you think it's OCD and have you tried Inositol?

If it's OCD, then I would consider looking into PANDAS and other bacteria.*But* for coping skills while you figure it out biomedically, have you considered trying to give it a purpose? You said she like tying things and that she got bored with thread because it might not be challenging. How about trying to teach her macrame and making friendship bracelets? Or teaching her crosstitching, knitting or crocheting? These can get very challenging so if she gets bored, she can advance to more challenging projects. They range from thick types of looping and threading to super fine work. You can continually get more challenging for a lifetime. She can make these things and then maybe have her give them to classmates and help with social skills and thinking about others and how to be gracious and how to accept compliments and thanks, I can go on! Lol! There's a whole world of ways you can use this to your advantage. And she may turn out to be an incredible artist with it.
