Local Government use of technology

Well, Steve, I hate to disappoint you, but you better be able to talk about

the latest road graders and ditch digging machines if you expect to get

anywhere with county officials. And city officials would love to hear how they

could replace their ambulances with pickups staffed with orangutans and spider

monkeys. That's biotechnology, my friend!

I have to ask this question: Technologies for what? Are you talking about

EMS, fire, cops, or just regular business?

Technology for waste management? Communications? Fleet management?

Information management? What?

As many of you know, my " day job " is being a professional speaker. And

I'm giving a speech next week on " Technology and Local Govt. " . So, do

any of you have ideas of technologies that we can apply to local

government settings? My audience is mostly county and city officials.

So what would you like to see your city or county do for you? And if

you represent a city or county, what technologies would you like to use?

Well, Dr. , it is " improvised " technology but still technology. In EMS,

it is technically called an " ITM " - improvised trunk monkey. It is launched

with the use of a cell phone......... ;)

All of the above. I'm going to present them a process for acquiring

technology, and part of that will be a list of some up and coming

technologies and how to use them. So for all aspects of governmental

operations, including public safety.

Mostly I'm going to tell them it's NOT about the technology, it's about

the people, and how you train, utilize, manage, and support them. And

how you need to know in detail WHAT you want to do before deciding HOW

to do it.

Communications technology is one of the most difficult areas for city and

county officials to understand. Many of them have bought junk systems that

wouldn't work and paid through the nose for them. Other technologies that they

may

or may not be using are meter reading technologies that eliminate meter

readers and process bills, information management systems, alternative fuel

sources, and so forth.

They are deluged with sales people trying to sell them this widgit or that,

and often they have no way of knowing what's good and what's bad.
