Guest guest
So as some of you might know, I struggle with setting limits with phone calls with nada and fada. I am completely financially independent from them except for my cell phone bill. So I have two questions: 1) Have any of you been in the situation where you told nada or fada you don't want to be on their cell phone plan anymore (I feel so weird asking this - - so many parents would be happy to see their kids so independent!) 2) Do you know of any relatively cheap phone plans (let's say 70/mo or less?)? I don't want to go NC with them, so I'll probably still call them, plus some friends. Texting isn't too important and having 250/month should be plenty. I currently have a smart phone so I'm not sure if I can opt out of the data plan or anything... I need enough information before I tell them I want to do this, and that I can make sure I can afford it all. I am making enough money to survive, but not much beyond that with paying for therapy as well haha...I know this will be worth it if I can. Guest guest
I would say if this is your only phone, then consider that if your nada is blowing up you phone with texts and calls, you might want to consider staying with the same company as your parents, but transfer financial responsibility of the number to yourself. If you want to keep your current number, this will involve getting the account holders permission, which would be whichever of your parents is the primary account holder. This is only useful if a) this company offers unlimited calling between customers with the same company you want to keep your current number c) you can get your nada or dad to tranfer financial responsibility to you. If none of the above are important to you, then just go with whatever plan meets your current needs. I ported my numbers from another carrier about a year after cell phone companies were forced to allow it. I know I was originally with my actual phone company, Qwest. When they sold out to Verizon I switched, because I was the one carrying five cell phones on my family plan, including my brother, husband, nada and dad in addition to my own number. I initially went with a company that my BFF was with, because she was the one that I spent hours on the phone with each month and being with the same company as her didn't eat into my minutes. If you have someone in particular that you spend the most time with on the phone, you might want to see what company they are with and if they have free mobile to mobile calling for their customers. Hope that helps. C > > So as some of you might know, I struggle with setting limits with phone calls with nada and fada. Guest guest
What would happen if you let your parents continue to pay for that particular cel phone service for a while, but you got a second, inexpensive cel phone and plan on your own. You'd have a new number that you could give only to your friends. Then you'd know for sure that you are only receiving calls and texts from your parents and relatives on the old cel phone/number. You could leave that cel phone at home and only check it once a day (or once a week, or whenever) and carry only your new cel phone around with you. Just thinking outside the box. That may or may not be feasible for you, just an idea to consider. But that way it gives you more control over who you choose to receive calls from and when to respond, and if your parents should suddenly stop paying on that cel for whatever reason (or if you decide to tell them thanks, but you don't need it anymore, you have your own now) you already have your second or new cel phone and number in use. But whether you decide to do that or not, its still going to come to a point where you either tell them directly or by your actions that you are no longer going to be responding to all their texts and all their calls immediately. I agree that paying for your own cel and plan will make that a LOT easier to do. -Annie > > > > So as some of you might know, I struggle with setting limits with phone calls with nada and fada. Guest guest
I have one of those Verizon pay as you go plans. I don't make a lot of calls, or get them, I actually chose this plan b/c of it's unlimited texting for $20 a month. I text a lot. So I pay $30 or so a month. You can choose what you pay per month, but it has to be more than the $20 for texting to keep that active. > > So as some of you might know, I struggle with setting limits with phone calls with nada and fada. Guest guest
Thanks all - - great advice from everyone, as usual!
