I might add, I think the darkness during winter here is the reason behind both the strong focus on light (symbolic, as in song lyrics etc, and very real light, as in lit candles etc) in Christmas (jul) celebrations here, and also the reason behind the celebration of Saint Lucia (December 13, when darkness really is at its deepest, about a week before winter solstice), in Swedish/Scandinavian tradition also known as "The Queen of Light". The lyrics of the main Lucia song (sung by schoolchildren and others all over Sweden during Dec 13) is all about the darkness, and about how it will end soon. I especially like the part about "soil forgotten by the sun". The song something like this in translation:"Night walks with heavy steps, 'round yard and cabin,'round soil forgotten by the sun, shadows are brooding,Then in our darkened house, arouses with candles lit,Sancta Lucia, Sancta LuciaThe Night was large and mute, now hear the sound,in every silent room, whispers as of wings, and see on our threshold stands, whitegowned with candles [light] in hair.Sancta Lucia, Sancta LuciaDarkness shall be fleeing soon, from every valley of the earth, that's the wonderful words she speaks to us,Day shall once again, rise new from rosy skySancta Lucia, Sancta Lucia"love/Reb> > >> > > Thanks nne.
