Guest guest
My 3yo hasd been sick for about 10 days now, started with swollen eyes, then lips, then sores on his lips, then the roof of his mouth became red and his tongue is the last thing to be affected. He had a 101-102 fever for about 6 days, we were refered to an ENT for possible tonsilitis but he says it's just a viral pharyngitis/ hand mouth and foot. He prescribed steroids for the swelling and acyclovir which we haven't yet started. I'm not sure that I want my already hyper child on steroids and I don't know too much about acyclovir. Before all of this started my son was doing so good, eye contact was present, following directions, no tantrums, he was not obsessed with his flags like he was when we started biomed, he was happy, eating and sleeping well... Things have changed drastically, he is back to spinning, more than ever before, his flag obsession is back full force, he screams and has 20 + fits every day, his eye contact has decreased and so has his speech. I am so scared he seems so unhappy, I feel like I lost him again. Is this typical of our kids when they get sick ? What should I do ? Please help ! Guest guest
Acyclovir will help with a herpes type virus which it does sound like he may have. If he also has a bacterial infection like strep you will need an antibiotic like amoxicillin or azithromycin. I would insist on a throat culture and also have his strep titers drawn (ASO/DNASE). You should start the acyclovir and see how much that helps or does not help. Before going to steroids you should try motrin around the clock for a few days. You can always move on to the steroids if the inflamation is still present. To: mb12valtrex Sent: Thursday, April 19, 2012 2:16 PM Subject: Is this typical ? Guest guest
, thanks for your reply. I was giving him motrin around the clock for 6 days but not since his fever stopped on Sunday for what it's worth. His strep test was negative, I will ask for the culture and blood work. Is it normal that he has regressed this much with this illeness ? He used to be sick all the time before we started biomed and this is the first time that he has gotten this sick since November. He had an ear infection in Jan but his behavior didn't change at all back then. I am so worried... > > Acyclovir will help with a herpes type virus which it does sound like he may have. Guest guest
I would start the acyclovir and see how it goes for a few days. You can wait to give the steroids....see how he responds to the acyclovir. To: mb12valtrex Sent: Thursday, April 19, 2012 2:31 PM Subject: Re: Is this typical ? , thanks for your reply. Guest guest
I would give the steroids. Swelling is painful. Pain medicine doesn't really get to that kind of pain. Steroids are the only thing that will help when swelling is that bad. You might consider the possibility that the pain is exactly why he's behaving badly. I just recently forced my husband to take me to the ER specifically so I could get IV steroids for severe strep throat despite my telling 3 other doctors that what I had wouldn't and wasn't working - the antibiotic was too weak and changing me from 800mg motrin to vicodin to percoset didn't fix the pain. The motrin probably isn't doing anything.FYI, there are also quite a few good reasons for steroids in ASD. My son is on hydrocortisone for andrenal fatigue. There is a prednisone protocol which is fairly high dose being used right now with some DANs and a study (I don't know if it's finished or not) on this protocol. I wouldn't poo-poo it. It might help the hyperactivity. And if he's viral, getting antivirals is a good thing.Obviously he's actively sick right now. This isn't just a latent virus thing that we typically treat with antivirals. He's actively ill. Why wouldn't you want to treat him? I would give him the steroids and the antivirals.Everything you've said is typical. Kids get sick and they regress. Sometimes there's a reason biomedically and sometimes they regress while they are actively sick and while recovering but go back to normal. But no matter what, it's likely you'll want to talk to a DAN about full time antivirals/antifungals. ~ Antiviral Therapy 101~~ Make a biomed book ~~ gryffinstail.wordpress.com ~~ @Gryffins_Tail ~
