Thanks for the update. Aubrie also had the video fluoroscopy a few times.

It's hilarious to watch the " invisible kid " talking and swallowing! It's a

fascinating test! I'm glad got a good report on swallowing and

reflux - and that he cooperated so well. I'm sure all were captivated by

him!

I don't know anything about your artery question, unfortunately. And I

don't know what you can do about the lack of diagnosis - except continue to

try for more testing. The testing is wonderful when it confirms the dx -

but it can be frustrating when it doesn't give you any helpful info. I'd be

especially frustrated when the testing just gives your disagreeable

geneticist reason to doubt the dx of CHARGE. If I were in your shoes, I'd

hold on to my place in the CHARGE family whether the professionals agreed or

not. I'd assume CHARGE until proven otherwise because I wouldn't want to

give up the support and knowledge that the dx gives me. I hope you get some

kind of definitive answer because limbo is not a fun place to be.

I'm hoping Keedy sees this and posts back to you. I sure Kendra had

some swallowing (and breathing?) difficulties due to an " artery issue " .

Hi all,

I haven't been dropping in much lately due to various things going

on. I may have mentioned that had gone to VCU Hospital for a

genetics consult and the doctor said she didn't believe

really fit the criteria for CHARGE as he only meets one of the major

criteria. She called Baylor where he was a study participant, and

they informed her that he does not have the CHARGE mutation either.

She said she would write my insurance agency to ask them to pay for

another CHARGE testing for him as she said that the way that testing

is done for a study is sometimes different. So right now, we're still

in limbo.

had his first swallow study done today and he was WONDERFUL!

His new, wonderful gastroenterologist thought that reflux may have

something to do with his eating problems. They also did a modified

barium swallow to see if he had any swallowing problems. I was so

worried about how they were going to get the barium in him since he

only eats certain things and seems to have a strong sensory aversion

to things. I gave him the barium through a syringe and told him it

was medicine and he actually took it. He was sooooo good!! He even

ate his foods with the barium paste in it and loved watching his

skeleton on the video eating LOL!! It was so cute, his skeleton had

glasses on!! LOL The whole test only took an hour to complete and the

staff were so wonderful. The speech path said the test looked great--

no reflux, no swallowing problems. However, I overheard the

radiologist telling the speech path about an unusual artery. I don't

remember the name of the artery he said and I didn't hear what called

his attention to it, but he told her it had nothing to do with his

swallowing. So now I am worried about what that artery business was!

Anyway, I just thought I'd update and if anyone might know anything

about an artery which might show up on a barium swallow, please

share! I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving!

Marilyn is so right about an unusual artery for Kendra.

Did the radiologist use the words aberrant or anomalous artery? If so if could

be a number of conditions.

In Kendra's case the condition she had was thought to be an aberrant left

subclavian artery. Ultimately, after an angiogram, it was visualized to be a

double aortic arch. In a swallow study it showed as a near hair-pin turn in her

esophagus.

A double aortic arch can create a vascular ring which may compress part of the

trachea and esophagus both. It can virtually make a ring around the trachea.

This was Kendra's problem and contributed to a very complex fitting for

tracheotomy tubes.

There are many children with aberrant arteries that do not require surgery at

all and who do well. It seems to me that Jillian, might have a double aortic

arch which does not need surgical intervention. Or at least it didn't last time

I heard.

In Kendra's case, surgery was necessary and led to decannulation from the trach

and ultimately vastly improved swallowing and eating.

I think it would be interesting to see the report to see what exactly looked

unusual. If the report is not clear, I would definitely call the doctor for an

explanation. It very possibly could be nothing to worry about or could be

something that needs some kind of medical intervention. Whatever the case, I

hope they clarify the information for you really soon so you don't need to

worry.

:-)

Hi ,

my daughter is 5 years old and has charge, she had the

vascular ring (double aortic arch) that was wrapped around her

trachea and oesophagus, the doctors only picked it up by the

indentation it caused in the oesophagus during a barium swallow. We

were very lucky to have picked it up so early, she had it repaired at

2 months old and her breathing improved dramatically, she still had

problems with swallowing and was G-tube fed till 3 years old.

Any artery that shows up on a barium swallow should be followed up by

a cardiologist.

had terrible reflux and eventually needed to have a fundo,

but just for interest - it NEVER showed up on the barrium swallow

tests, she couldn't swallow either, but the barium always managed to

go down perfectly, which made me happy that we could do the tests,

but it was also frustrating.

Good luck

Hi ,

Wow, it's good to hear the doctors picked up on that early! I

definitely think we need to get set up with a cardiologist again.

had been " dismissed " from further cardiology appointments at

about 3 years of age when the doctor told us that his ASD closed. It

made me suspicious that the doctor NEVER did an echo, rather only did

an EKG and came to that conclusion. I'm not a doctor, but that didn't

sound right to me. Even subequent pediatricians and other doctors

say " ..and he didn't do an echo and could tell it closed??!! " I did put

a call in to the doctor, but he won't be in until Friday, so I'll have

to hold out until then! Thanks for the reply!!

Hi ,

I am not certain what he called the artery, only that it started with

an " A " and I can't be sure he said either of those things. I did put a

call in to the doctor today, but he's out until Friday so I'll have to

hold out! I did hear the radiologist mention that this artery didn't

affect his swallowing, so at least that's a good thing. I'm glad you

mentioned that there are children who have it who don't require

surgery. That would have been my next question because if he indeed

does have that, he certainly shows no signs of it. I think his whole

eating problem is sensory/texture and not any structural problem.

Thanks for the info and I'll keep you posted!

, I'm so glad you wrote,. I knew there was someone else on the list now

(or, at least one), that had a double aortic arch. I often wonder what our life

might have looked like if Kendra's double aortic arch had been found early. I'm

almost positive she would have avoided the time her airway was completely

blocked for five minutes.

Even though it was a horrible, horrible experience, (the airway blockage), I

don't think it alone accounts for the language and learning difficulties that

Kendra experiences. But, then again, it didn't help anything either, and

certainly resulted in extra hospitalizations and illnesses during the time the

cause of the breathing problem was as yet unknown. The illnesses and

hospitalizations did, though have an adverse effect on her language learning due

to their severity. They precluded doing much of anything else than keeping her

healthy and breathing as is the case for so many of our kids.

It is really neat to read of how (relatively) smoothly things could go when

things can be diagnosed accurately early on. I'm sure the 15 year age

difference between Kendra and has some bearing on the state of the

medical knowledge at the time.

Anyway, thanks for the information you sent to . I appreciated it

also!

and Kendra :-)

Hi all,Hope everyone is well, this quiet (and dreary, here) Sunday.I'm good, except I feel fatigue and depression sneaking intome. Slept wrong or something last night, and I have a dang soreneck to show for it! If I don't move my head, I'm cool. If I do,man, do I have pain!Went to Dorney Park on Thursday--town, PA, with all5 kids! Unfortunately, it rained just about the whole day.We opted to just do the rides, and not the water park, aswe were wet enough already, and I didn't want anyonegetting sick with getting drenched. It wasn't soaking/torrentialrain, just enough to put a damper on the day. We did all tryto make the most of it. The kids had a blast riding all theroller coasters. At some points, they had to close the steelcoasters what with the rain, but then it would ease up, andthey'd reopen. This coming Thursday, I'm going to be joining an old friendof mine in New York City at a pub called Connolly's and see a music group called, The High Kings. They play Celtic music, and have wonderful harmonies. I don't followthem, but my friend does, and she emailed me a few of theirsongs, and they are quite good. Surprisingly, the tickets areonly $20, which is unheard of, in these parts. It has been a long time since I've had an evening out. I'm going to try andget in a good solid nap that day to prepare for the evening.I'm taking the train in alone, which is gonna feel weird; beenages since I've taken the train, and forget about alone!I am missing hearing from folks today. Seems like many Sundays are quiet around here.I went to church today, which is rare these days, but wasgreat to get there. This upcoming week is our church'sVacation Bible School Camp, which my 2 younger kids enjoy. My 18 year old and I are each helping with doing differentcrafts, so that should be fun. It will give us some structure,if only for the morning ,as it's 9 to 12.I hope everyone is feeling well. Know that each of youare loved and treasured.Hugs, Katelove and blessings,Kate

Dear KateI don't like to hear that depression is sneaking up on you. I hope that is all gone by tomorrow morning when you rise and shine. I was wondering if you are still singing in your Praise Band? Is there a reason you don't get to church often anymore? I don't either and that's because it is such a distance and we would have to go in two vehicles. To make it worse one of the vehicles ('s truck) take a load of gas. Money is too tight here for that. Now that I write that I realize how it just sounds like "excuses". Uh oh!I hope you trip by train is smooth and easy. Enjoy your special night out!love SharonThis email is a natural hand made product.
