Guest guest
Well, we just got back from the dentist and my son has a cavity. She wants to use nitrous oxide. I explained to her that my son is deficient in B-12 and has to have twice-weekly shots and she is not concerned. Thinks I am nuts. She may be right, but I don't think about this:) I know I have seen something saying that kids with b12 deficiency should not have nitrous...does anyone have those citations? What are other options you all have used? I am terrified of a regression...they " accidentally " gave him fluoride today and I think it's contributing to the 2 hour long meltdown he just had over finding out he has a cavity. Thank you, Amie

Guest guest
I think the summary attached is helpful. I agree with Pamela, find another dentist. Cavities are not an emergency. Guest guest
Thanks to all who responded. My gut was telling me to avoid NO and now it's telling me to take him to MY mercury-free dentist that will not give me grief-my son will just have to trade dinosaur murals for sound health, oh well...What do you all do when your children have to have dental work and can't use NO? I do want to get the cavity taken care of before it gets worse. > > > > Well, we just got back from the dentist and my son has a cavity. She wants to use nitrous oxide. Guest guest
they don't NEED NO you can use things like ISOflorine and SEVOflorine bases instead. however they are both floride based. but floride products also typically contain milk in them too, so it may be a milk infraction. I would call to ask for the number to get ingredients. the articals you are looking for on www.autism.com site under the sedation info. I also Have 2 artiacals and websites I can send you too on more info of what NOT to use and what TO use with mito kids (which are the ones low in b12 that can't do NO because of an MTHFR mutation that would quickly deplete b12 causing damage) send me an email off group and I will forward those pages to you. missvermont94@... Guest guest
We have a very patient and kind dentist who is good with kids with special needs. I hold my son's hand lovingly. For extractions, we go to the OR. My son's oral pain is the root of his anorexia. > > > > Well, we just got back from the dentist and my son has a cavity. She wants to use nitrous oxide. Guest guest
That depends.....if you don't specify that he can't have it to the anesthesiologist, sometimes they use it to get them out quickly and then use something else or start and IV.......I would always specify to both the dentist AND the anesthesiologist. I told them that my son has a MTHFR deletion and they asked no questions...... Guest guest
Yes, we discuss the case with both the dentist and the anesthesiologist. I did threaten to have one anesthesiologist removed from a case and she changed her mind. This was a GI procedure, not oral. > > > > > > Is there another option besides NOxide???...
