Guest guest
It is 18 here too. Or, 18 is the drinking age (meaning you can drink alcoholic beverages in restaurants, and it is legal to offer you alcoholic beverages in a home too), but you need to be 20 to buy beverages from the liquor stores. It's a bit strange to have that difference, admittedly, but I think the reasoning is that someone who is 18 will be able to drink only where there is some kind of supervision. However, while that reasoning may make sense in theory, in the real world I don't think it quite works that way, so I wouldn't mind if the liquor store age limit was 18 too. I think 18 and 16 are the two most common drinking age limits in most of Europe. In Denmark, for instance, it's 16 on buying alcoholic beverages in stores, and 18 on drinking in restaurants. In other words, they make a difference between the two too, but the difference is the other way around compared to the Swedish drinking ages. Don't know what the reasoning is there though. Maybe that you should "practice" drinking on you own before being allowed to do it in public... I think you are right that age limits and prohibitions may work to mystify and make things more interesting than it would otherwise be. I am quite sure that is the case with the Swedish age limit (18) on buying cigarettes (and other kinds of tobacco). There used to be no age limit, but it was introduced in 1997 to minimize smoking among teenagers (and younger kids, I suppose, although they rarely smoke). And I was against it on precisely that ground. Teenagers who start smoking usually do so because they want to be/act/be seen as grown up, and how much stronger will the "grown up effect" be if you need to be legally adult to buy it?On a fun side note, both and myself have been denied to buy tobacco because we hadn't got any ID (to prove our age) with us, even after turning 30. I guess we must look young... And before the age limit on tobacco had been introduced, but after I was definitely grown up I once had strange experience. I was stepping out of the university building and was on my way home, I picked up a cigarette and lit it (I smoked back then), and then an upset woman came up to me and asked if I had my parents permission to smoke. I: Ehhm...??? My parents permission? She: As I am sure you know our school does not allow kids to smoke unless they have their parents written permission, so unless you do I suggest you put that out!I: Our school??She: Don't pretend that you don't know! What class are you in?I: Not quite sure what you mean...but I am taking history of filosofy this term. She: Oh... I am sorry...I thought you were one of the kids from the high school where I work. We are doing a field trip to the university today.Like I said....I guess I look young...I used to find it annoying, but these days I kind of take it as a compliment if I am asked to show ID when I am buying a bottle of wine... (being asked to show ID to buy tobacco still annoys me though...).love/Reb>> I remember in Spain when I lived there (it has changed since) there was no> drinking age, I used to see little kids 3-4-5 years old sitting in> restaurants drinking out of huge mugs of beer at lunch...it was common. Guest guest
I was carded as late as 35, which is lovely. Where I shop now for groceries, I get carded every time but that is only because they have to input my birth year into their system to sell it, not based on looks. As far as drinking age, I think if they are going to make the drinking age 21 they should make the military age 21 as well, it just does not make sense to me that a young wo/man can go to war and not be able to have a beer! ~*~Hugs~*~ ~*~Akiba~*~ Pragmatic Visionary http://www.affiliates-natural-salt-lamps.com/pages/156.php -- the real update > > > MS-wise: has not been having any noticeable flare-up.
