Impatience...the Swedish kind

This is the week the new IKEA catalogues are being/will be distributed to all households in Sweden. I know in other countries you have to order the catalogue, or get it at the store, but in Sweden it's mailed to everyone, and it's mailed to everyone the same week, although what day it arrives at your house may differ depending on how the post office schedule the delivery (I do understand that a postman can't be expected to carry those heavy catalogues for everyone in his district on the same day...frustrating as it may be). And Swedes are a just a wee bit funny about that catalogue... In the weeks before the dates of it's delivery is official, speculation on it is a subject in many conversations (like: "So...do you know when the new Ikea catalogue is

supposed to be out?" "It should be here soon, don't you think?"). This year, at the end of the vacation, when we visited with my dad and his wife on our way home from that cottage in the nature reserve, Pixie went to "get a story book" from the living room, and returned with an ikea catalogue, and everyones reaction was immediately: "Is that the NEW one? Has it come?" (we had been without access to such things as mail etc for a week). Turned out it was last year's. But the fact that everyone reacted immediately on the sight of a seemingly new ikea catalogue in august is pretty typical...Yesterday over dinner, on the subject of expected mail that had or hadn't arrived, I said: "And the IKEA catalogue hasn't come, either. Isn't that a bit strange! I mean, this IS the week it's supposed to be here, and it's already...ok....Tuesday...but anyway..."A few years ago (and I may have told you this before, but

bear with me...) we were at two friends place, we were sitting outside, as where many of their neighbors in the apartment complex, the weather was nice, so people were taking their coffee outside, some where barbecuing. Then suddenly someone opened a window and shouted: "Hey! The Ikea catalogue is here!" And it was fascinating to see the effect. With a swoosh sound, the garden outside the apartment house was empty... Add the fact that the catalogue is often reviewed in prestigious papers, by the critics that otherwise write about art, you start to get scoop of the obsession... In fact I read, just the other day (in one of those prestigious papers...) an article about how critics, journalists and culture workers working with Ikea in Sweden tend to be very taken in by the whole phenomenon, and tend to give free PR to the company rather than being critical. It was exemplified by an Ikea exhibit

in Liljewalch's Art Gallery the other year. And the writer reasoned that everyone in Sweden has some kind of relationship to Ikea (if only through the catalogue and/or the funiture of their homes), and that can make distancing hard. I noticed that the article was illustrated with the slide show of "ikea catalogues from different eras" that can be found on the Ikea website, and is being used in Ikea TV commercials right now...The new catalogue is already available electronically on the ikea website, but I wouldn't sneak peek at it before the actual catalogue has arrived, that's like opening your Christmas gifts on December 23 or something... But it's now Wednesday already! That's practically the end of the week! The catalogue better land in our mailbox today... ; )love/Reb

I got a really cool IKEA cabinet with shelves on top and drawers on the bottom last year from Freecycle! The people who gave it had never even put it together.
