Well. It went well. When we arrived in his room, he was in his easy chair with his head thrown back and his mouth opened wide and snoring. It took some time to rouse him. He was slow to know what was going on, but that's to be expected when you're nearly 88. He kept counting us (there were 6 of us--Lloyd and me, and 4 of the 5 kids). He has a chant of--Kara, Lia, Luke, , , so he knows the kids names by heart. But matching names to faces proved a challenge for him. I always like to brag that I picked a good name, , for my 3rd daughter--that's my maiden name, so obviously my dad's last name. My 22 year old daughter had him remembering the song, Pony Boy, he used to croon to each one of the kids while gently bouncing them on his knee. He sang it, and just about recalled

all the words! I was impressed. He seemed in good spirits, which was a real blessing to me and all of us. The only major concern I have is the cough. It's wicked bad. Sounds like he's gargling when he coughs. I don't know if I mentioned the other day, but they have now had to thicken the liquids he drinks, and puree his food. He's been having trouble swallowing. All in all a good visit. I thank each of you for your prayers, good wishes and thoughts as I went down to PA to see him. I'm going to call the nursing home later to find out how he's doing.love to all,Kate

one thing you can do is make a memory book - any 3 ring binder - don't put original pics - just scan and write what it is

the houses he lived in - his hobbies

a page for each of the kids and grandkids as they grew and the stages of his life

you know what he loved and things he knows on good days

the saying the kids names is pushing altzheimers away

you know what will have meaning to him God, grant me the strength of eagles wings, the faith and courage to fly to new heights, and the wisdom to rely on his spirit to carry me there.

Yes, it was moving. Thank you, Dan. Since it's nearly 6hours round-trip, I'm not certain when the next time we'llget to see him again. Maybe I can try to see him once a month, and work out the day my daughter has off fromwork.love,KateTo: mserslife Sent: Sat, February 26, 2011

I'm so glad you had such a wonderful, happy visit with your dad!! It made me smile reading all about it. What does his doc say about the cough? Has your dad had a stroke? I know that can cause the swallowing problems because that's what happened with my dad. hugs SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. No, no stroke. It's just the pneumonia I believe has made it difficult to breathe, as well asswallow--at least that's what they make it sound like. He has COPD and CHF in addition to the pneumonia. He kept asking, are these all your kids? lol. He couldn't believe I had so many! I didn't even have Lia with me!I am so glad we went to visit!love, KateTo:

Did he have a "watery" sound when he coughed? If so that's the congestive heart failure. SharonThis email is a natural hand made product.

I'm so glad you had such a wonderful, happy visit with your dad!! It made me smile reading all about it. What does his doc say about the cough? Has your dad had a stroke? I know that can cause the swallowing problems because that's what happened with my dad. hugs SharonThis email is a natural hand made product.

Hi Kate,....Steve's dad also had the same type of coughing your dad has, and when it got too hard for him to cough up the fluid, they suctioned it out for him. Have they tried that with your dad? Its not a very pleasent thing to have done, but it helps.

Hugs, Jackie

Wow, Sharon. That's a heavy burden to care for both your dad and your grandmother. You have been a nurture-r for a very long time. Yes, the sound is horrific. Sounds like he's drowning almost.I feel so blessed to know you.love,Kate

Thanks Kate:) I took care of my maternal grandmother til her death, then my dad til his death. I took care of my mom until she got so ill I couldn't take care of her myself anymore and I found a good nursing home. I was so distraught the day she went to the nursing home and filled with guilt. But it turned out to be a good thing for her because they were able to regulate her medications and she had several really good years in the nursing home before she died. Mom had a good life at the nursing home, made many friends, had a boyfriend and managed the gift shop. She was also named third runner up in the Ms. Arizona Nursing Home Pageant. Anyway, I am rambling! I'm fortunate to have been able to meet you too. And that's the

truth!loveSharonThis email is a natural hand made product. The slight variations in spelling and grammar enhance its individual character and beauty and in no way are to be considered flaws or defects. To: MSersLife Sent: Sun, February 27, 2011 5:34:49 AMSubject: Re: dad visit
