Hi guys.

My son is 5 diagnosed with autism. His teacher commented today that my son often

goes into 'staring into space' mode where he doesn't respond or blink if called.

I didn't realise how frequent it was. I do that myself sometimes, especially

when tired. A lot of us do, yeh?

He is nonverbal and has a fair way to go biomedically. No seizures to date.

Does anyone know what this is? I've heard it can be referred to as

mini-sizures?

Is there any appropriate action to take?

Thanks in advance.

Debbie :-)

We see my son staring off into space quite often too. When he was 7, we did an EEG at the hospital to check for seizures thinking that is what they were, but all the tests came back negative. I think he is just daydreaming.

the way we were told to decifer was when he was like that was to see if he would flinch, look for a startel reflex. if he CAN its not a seizer, we even tested it spraying water from a spray bottle from it, and he couldn't react or blink, which ruled in seizers. so yes they are called absent seizers

Thanks ladies for your replies. Ok so those spaced out periods are called

'absent seizures'. Just need to know if there's anything to do biomed

treatment-wise then? Or is it something that will fade as his body heals?

Many thanks

Debbie :-)
