Hi All,I was wondering if there are any pros or cons of declining kindergarden school. He will be 5 in september and I want him to go kindergarden when he is 6. I am totally disappointed by the pre-k. No improvements whatsoever. Want him to got to a private school which is big on inclusions and see if that makes a difference. Am still looking around for good schools. Have an IEP this monday and not sure what to tell them. The program could be good but it did not work for my son. And apparently a good percentage of the kids from his class are all going to self contained A class. Is this normal? Also, should I tell the case manager that I am not interested or wait it out till sept. This

also applies to extended year. Pls advise

Every state has different rules and policies. Contact your local school

district and see what their policy is. Explain to them your situation

as well, so they can include policy for special needs children when

relaying their information.

Hard to define what is normal or best for each child. If you are not comfortable with him starting K then just hold him back. Where I live Kindergarten is optional, and homeschool is well accepted. We just need to register or enroll them as a homeschool learner when they are supposed to enter grade 1. Check out your laws, and then follow your instincts. We began K late w our daughter, 27y now. If I had to do it over, I would home

school. We did home school for a couple of school segments when we could not get

a decnt IEP worked out. Those IEPs are a farce from what we experienced. The

school has the child for many hours/day and pretty much does what it wants in

the setting no matter what is written. A self contained classroom would be my

last resort - an excuse to do litle for the child and no modeling of 'normal'

for the child. Once we settled into a routine at home, were able to do more in

2 hours/day for approx 12 weeks[x2] than was accomplished in the prior 2 years.

Here, one can also opt for using the school setting for some of the day - speech

therapy/OT, pe, sports teams[as they get older] etc.

I found good materials at a local curriculum lab. We did not continue as her dad

was a teacher and would not abide shunnung the system! Like you, we followed

advice to do the pre K program and found little value in it for our child. She

was overwhelmed, sat on the sidelines and had no social enhancement. We only did

this part time, thank heavens! some examples of what an intense physical program

can accomplish - thanks to a UK mom for this.
