I have to confess something that might sound awful...My dad still kinda knows whowe are. They are 6 of us kids in the family, and sometimes he mixes up my sistersand me and my brothers...but there are days I wish he would go home (to heaven)before he forgets who we all are. That sounds really selfish I know, but I think it wouldbe easier on everyone. I don't wish ill of him,I really don't. I just don't know how I'll dealwith his not knowing me, or any of us anymore. Alzheimers really robs all of us, not justthe person with it...love to you Jackie, and each,Kate How To dance In The Rain> To: "MSers Life egroup" > Date: Wednesday, September 1, 2010, 7:07 AM> > > > > > > > > > > > > > How to Dance in the Rain > > > > It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his> 80's, arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb.> > He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.> > I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be> over an hour before someone would be able to see him.> > I saw him looking at his watch, and decided, since I was not busy> with another patient, I would evaluate his wound.> > On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got> the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.> > While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another> doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry.> > The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home> to eat breakfast with his wife.> > I inquired as to her health; he told me that she had been there for> a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease.> > As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late.> > He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not> recognized him in five years now.> > I was surprised, and asked him, 'And you still go every morning,> even though she doesn't know who you are'?> > He smiled as he patted my hand and said, 'She doesn't know me, but> I still know who she is'.> > I had to hold back tears as he left; I had goose bumps on my arm,> and thought, 'That is the kind of love I want in my life'.> > True love is neither physical, nor romantic. I have my Lady Mother at the nursing home I worked at - I had a migraine the day Steve brought her in - when I went in the next morning I was still half out of it - it was Lila so I went to her nursing station nurse and asked about her - seems it took 6 of them to get her back in at shift change before I got there - she was swearing like a sailor - at 5' 2'' or 3 and 100 lbs she can be a hand full

all I said was that's my mom and went on to the dining room - I came in from the west side and I was looking for her - than she hollered across the dr - there's my red head

after I left her I retraced my steps - when I started across the great room the east rising sun blots everything out - the next thing I know Steve had me in a bear hug and he is saying I knew you would take care of her

until he died of a massive heart attack 2 years ago he saw her after breakfast every morning - there were times it took the two of us with the med nurse looking on to get her dilantin into her - she is epileptic

that was the start of me and Steve working together to take care of her - I even wrote up aides that weren't doing their job - I just handed the memo to the Director of Nursing in staff meeting and things were taken care of

and telling the staff in general if I tell Steve what you are doing you will not like the outcome

Lila and I adopted each other the summer of 1985 in Beginning Experience - a support group for adults working through the death of a relationship

before I left in 2003 she was able to understand and talk to me about the certification classes I took in 3 levels of grief and bereavement

the picture of us together was 9/1/02 at the memorial service the residents wanted for 9/11

since 2004 I have not been able to see her - I went the day after I was told of Steve's death - she was snowed with meds and didn't recognize me until I put my arms around her and kissed her on her cheek

I will go to her funeral - if I can't I will remember her in my own way

yes I understand about a parent and friend not knowing you

Steve also approved of giving her coffee whenever she wanted - he knew I keep chocolate in my desk for her

my sharing helps both of us - looking back it is funny

Lila was walking when she came in - she had a knack of finding me when someone had pissed her off - I would be charting and she would come in a high drudgion - depending on the level - I either ignored her when she made a bee line for the big chair or talk her down or take her through a guided meditation we both knew

then their was Elvira - any male over the age of puberty was fair game to her - even the ministers - when my fiancee came to Thanksgiving dinner - we walked down the hall on my side to see that everyone was out or on the way to dinner - Elvira took one look at him grabbed his hand and started for the dining room with him trying to keep up - he grabbed my hand and all three of us were going down the hall at a trot - I put Elvira with another resident = he tried to help me hand out trays - he tried - I finally said go sit with Elvira - when I got back with our trays - I barely sat down and he said Miss Elvira hasn't got her coffee - so I went and got both of them coffee - Elvira spent the entire meal mooning over him - it took him 2 weeks to me to tell me she wasn't just patting his knee she went higher - all I did was laugh

I was charting one afternoon - I had a Luther VanDrese CD on - the door was open to half way monitor the general uproar - I was concentrating and Elvira sidled in - I didn't pick up on that until she stated That's belly rubbing music for 2 o'clock in the morning - I came 6 inches off the chair

she was a hoot

Elvira decided to join us in a friday clatch with the department heads = it was April and we were talking about summer coming and having to diet to get into swimsuits

Elvira piped up and said she wanted a sexy bra - both hands in the right place and joggling

I was part here and said if I get you a sexy bra you will want go go boots and hot pants

She grew up in Detroit in the 20 - 30's - she was a handful

It is so hard to feel a parent slipping away mentally. Neither of mine had Alzheimers but my mother had something that had similar results. She had cirrhosis of the liver (not from drinking but from a surgery accident). Her liver couldn't process proteins correctly and when she had an overload of protein it would cause major brain involvement including coma (she would be in a coma for a week at times). There were so many times I wanted to talk to my mother about things/life and she just wasn't "there". She looked fine physically but her mind just wasn't there. So I do understand Kate. sending you big hugs SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. I just don't know how I'll dealwith his not knowing me, or any of us anymore. she is snowed with meds and doesn't know me - it hurts too much at times - so I don't go

Steve is dead and her daughter in law has POA - Rita and I get along well - I just don't want to give her pain

At my mother's nursing home there was a woman named Bobo. Bobo had a tattoo on her tushie that she offered to show everyone she came across. My step-mom is healthy as a horse, and I saw a difference in her after my dad died in '95. She just wasn't the same, and so many people said it was because she was grieving, which could have been part of it. But when she told me she couldn't remember how to work her sewing machine a few years after, and other things she easily did her whole life I knew something else was going on and I told her family that I thought she was in the first stages of Alz's. No one wanted to believe it, and only one sister decided to get her tested, and the tests came back okay. So then she and her son move to OK, and after all these years he has seen her decline, and now she is dx'ed with it. She did have a heart episode last year that damaged her heart enough that the Dr's said she wouldn't survive another one, but other than that she is physically fit.

I never had a close relationship with her, but I still can't help feeling sad that she developed this. When she couldn't recognize my dads picture is when it caused the worse sadness in me. She adored him.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother. :-(

Hugs and Love, Jackie

one thing that is imperative

she needs POA for medical and regular - we all do - it needs to be in writing

the second is you have to put in writing what to do if you can't answer for yourself - who speaks for you and what to do

a Do Not Resuscitate

also what do you want in a funeral - memorial service, funeral, cremation

do you want earth burial or cremation

since we have MS we can not donate out bodies to a medical school

I got the lecture from one of my big brothers in 1985 - since I was and am single someone has to carry out your wishes

I sure as crappola do not want Grace and her son turning me into a vegetable or buring me in a cemetary - I have had a DNR since I was in my 20's

my heart sisters have my POA and I have a DNR - I am not giving up - they know to fight for me if I have a change other wish no tubes and machines

they know I will haunt them if my memorial service in the mountains and spreading my ashes in the high mountains is not done

I am not being morbid - with what we deal with every day - it is one less thing to worry about
