Guest guest
Yes I would say they are have a good cluster program, my child was transferred there from another school because there were some serious problems and after many meetings lots of money spent on an advocate she was sent to Tradewinds and we have not regretted it. There are four students in the class (I do not know if this is the norm) with a Teacher and Teacher's assistant. Whenever I have a question I can contact the teacher via home notes or phone and I can usually get my questions or problems answered/solved without a parent teacher conference. My child has Fragile X and I am thankful the teacher has tried learning more about it and have implemented some of the strategies she has learned…..this is vastly different from the other school my child attended. The office staff is nice, the Autism coach, Teachers and Teachers Assistants are great and the PTA has events to raise money for the cluster program at the school. We recently finish an autism ribbon color and blue jeans day last week to raise money for the sensory garden that is located where the cluster kids exit at the end of school day. I cannot list any bad things about them because I do not know of any, that is not to say there isn‘t any it’s just t hat in the 2 ½ years my child has been attending there I have not had any major problems and hopefully it will remain that way. If you need anything else let me know. Best of luck to your friend and their child. Guest guest
That was well said. I have gone through 6 IEP's with my 2 children and NEVER did they give me a draft before the meeting. But this is Palm Beach county and it's nowhere near as good as Broward. Every question I asked, even of supervisors, was met with a brick wall. That's where advocated are so handy. Guest guest
The reason why they don't give you a draft is by law an IEP is supposed to be written by the IEP team in the moment - not prior. However, as a parent you can let your teacher know that you want to see what goals the teacher is presenting at the IEP meeting and ask to be able to give some input because you have the right. If they don't allow you to do this before you can certainly do this at the meeting because it's your right. I am in PBC and have always gone back and forth with the teacher about the goals prior to the IEP meeting. Even though the law states that the IEP team is to create the goals at the meeting, technically it would just take too long for that process and they would never get through all the IEPs, but that should not deter you from working with your child's teacher on the goals prior to the meeting. I think if you asked you would probably find that they would be compliant on this matter. That was well said. Guest guest
At the very minimum you should get it the day before the meeting. If that isn't enough time for you to review than call the following morning and reschedule the meeting.Sent from my iPad The reason why they don't give you a draft is by law an IEP is supposed to be written by the IEP team in the moment - not prior. Guest guest
Federal Procedural Safeguards: they have to give you anything relating to your child before an IEP IF YOU ASK: land passed a Law last year mandating parents get a draft IEP 5 days before an IEP. Steve TITLE 34--EDUCATION CHAPTER III--OFFICE OF SPECIAL EDUCATION AND REHABILITATIVE SERVICES, DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION PART 300--ASSISTANCE TO STATES FOR THE EDUCATION OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES --Table of Contents Subpart E--Procedural Safeguards Sec. 300.562 Access rights. (a) Each participating agency shall permit parents to inspect and review any education records relating to their children that are collected, maintained, or used by the agency under this part. The agency shall comply with a request without unnecessary delay and before any meeting regarding an IEP, or any hearing pursuant to Secs. 300.507 and 300.521-300.528, and in no case more than 45 days after the request has been made. ( The right to inspect and review education records under this section includes-- (1) The right to a response from the participating agency to reasonable requests for explanations and interpretations of the records; (2) The right to request that the agency provide copies of the records containing the information if failure to provide those copies would effectively prevent the parent from exercising the right to inspect and review the records; and (3) The right to have a representative of the parent inspect and review the records. © An agency may presume that the parent has authority to inspect and review records relating to his or her child unless the agency has been advised that the parent does not have the authority under applicable State law governing such matters as guardianship, separation, and divorce. Guest guest
, you have to look at the IEP Process objectively. Essentially what is presented is a predetermined IEP and your input is important but you in no way represent a consensus in the process. They tell you your imput is important but what they mean to say is your presence is important. They are more interested in counting you than wanting to hear something different then what they have drafted. This is the primary reason why a wise parent uses a good advocate. And although it is a good idea to confer with the child's teacher, keep in mind who she works for. The system's needs and the child's needs are very often very different. Guest guest
Hi khat, They both have to follow the same law. And that Advocate can review what the school has drafted. The way I look at it, I don't want to be surprised no more than they do. That draft helps leveling the playing field. Guest guest
Sharon, let me just add that if your friend's child is going to regular Kindergarten next year, they have a very nice program. There is a big difference between general ed and special classes. Needs are different. To: sList Cc: Valancy Sent: Mon, May 2, 2011 8:17:37 AMSubject: Re: Tradewinds Thank you, thank you, thank you!
