Guest guest
Hello I am posting on behalf on my friend who has her 8 year old son on valtrex and difflucan. He has been on valtrex for approx 4 months and he has just had blood results back indicating poor liver function and his Dr has stopped the Valtrex. My friend is very nervous of stopping it as she is fearful that the virus may become resistant. Can anyone advise if the her doctor has given her the right advice? What is the best protocol when liver function function tests are poor -stop valtrex completely or just until the liver recovers then re-start? Maybe substitute valtrex for a different anti viral or replace with naturals? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Many thanks Lis x
Guest guest
This happened to my son. He was on ketaconazole and valtrex. We switched to amp b and valtrex and retested lft. He was normal. I began daily milk thistle and we later switched to diflucan instead of ketaconazole. Lft was still normal. The elavated lft was from the antifungal, not the valrex. > > Hello I am posting on behalf on my friend who has her 8 year old son on valtrex and difflucan. Guest guest
Yes, agreed. My son isn't on valtrex yet but his liver enzymes were slightly elevated by the antifungals (diflucan and sporonox). Amp b and nystatin (nystatin is too wimpy though for valtrex from what I hear) apparently don't affect the liver. I think we brought down his enzyme numbers with bioray's liverlife...we are now ramping up to full dose so will see if this brings them down further.-- Sent from my Palm Pre This happened to my son. Guest guest
It's usually the antifungal that's the problem, not the antiviral when it comes to liver enzymes. Typically what you do is stop the antifungal, retest in a couple weeks to make sure enzymes are back to normal and try again with a different antifungal. It's rarely the Valtrex causing liver issues as it clears through the kidneys, not the liver. ~ Antiviral Therapy 101~ gryffinstail.wordpress.com/ ~~ @Gryffins_Tail ~ Hello I am posting on behalf on my friend who has her 8 year old son on valtrex and difflucan.
