Can anyone give me any feedback about the JCC Giborim Camp??

My son is 6 years old and have high functioning autism.

We will be moving to Florida in the summer and planning to send him to this camp

but not sure if they can handle the difficult behaviors that might emerge during

this major transion time.

Thank you in advance !!

Hopefully you already have a spot in the camp as they fill up very quickly ...This will be the ninth year my 16 year old has attended Camp Giborim. It is a wonderful camp with staff that truly care about the campers. They have trained persons who can handle behaviors and have been very supportive through the behaviorally challenging rough spots that I have had with my son through the years. The staff is wonderful and I would suggest you speak with Dermer, the director. He is appraochable, knowledgable, compassionate and really gets the issues and behaviors that accompany autism. If you have a spot I am pretty certain that he will welcome your input to develop a plan that will assist your child in transitioning and having a GREAT summer...My son is

already talking about going back to camp!!

My son is starting there this summer for the first timeI heard great things about it And the director made a good impressionWhen I signed up he did ask me if my son has bad behaviorsSo I can't help you much but I can just say it's a good choice for high functioning childrenI just you just talk to the director and consult himGood luckSent from my iPad

They are great!!!!! Have you contacted them? I only ask, because due to the quality of the camp, many people leave deposits at the end of each summer for the next one. They fill up very quickly. My son is eight and has high functioning autism (technically PDD-NOS) and this will be his 4th summer there. Every head counselor is a special needs teacher, and most of the staff has been there for years. My son has a great time and my mind is always at ease.Hope this helps!Subject: feedback on JCC Special Needs Summer Camp in DavieTo: sList Date:

They are a great camp, and most campers and staff return year after year. My only complaint is the fee, it's very expensive.

They tend to book up fast, so if you are seriously interested I suggest you call them now.

Good luck.

My daughter is HFA with behavioral concerns and we had a really good experience there. We were there when she was 3 & 4 and then had to move. Just to clarify not ALL staff are special needs teachers. The camp is divided by groups typically based on ages. Each group is runned by someone who is a special needs teacher, and their assitants are typical teenagers. Though I will tell you, most of these kids are amazing and many come back year after year. Some of the teenagers have special needs siblings, some are in college studying special needs, etc. There's no bullying going on there.

Dermer has runned this camp for years, and has a strong behaviorist background. They can handle most behaviors, however I have seen some very agressive children that they have refused to take.

I had also heard some fabulous things about the JCC camp program, I tried to get my son into the program a few years back but was turned away because he is high functioning. As per the YMCA regular camp program. I agree that the counselors there are not trained to handle the special needs population. We had a bad experience there too. I understand that there is also a YMCA special needs camp division. We haven't tried that yet, may be a better option.

Just another FYI - the camp is filled up usually a year in advance and there's a waiting list. That's how awesome this camp is. What am I going to do when my daughter ages out?
