Guest guest
I am 53 and am just now coming to terms with the fact that my mother has BPD. In fact I had never heard the term before my cousin, a therapist, mentioned it to me a few weeks ago. Have now read several books and realize why I have so many issues. Now I want to make changes in my life but it all seems so overwhelming. Most importantly, I need to know how to respond to my mother when she acts the way she does, or how to even recognize the manipulation before I get sucked in. After over 50 years of responding one way, it's not going to be easy to change but, I need to! So I feel like I need a good therapist that is familiar with BPD. I found one on this site who is in my area, but feel I should interview more than one. Does anyone know of any other sites? Thanks so much! Guest guest
Group, I am kind of new to this group. However, we seem to get this particular question a lot; every time we get it we answer it basically the same way. For a question that gets asked with such frequency, what do you think about creating a file or a group of files on the subject. Maybe one file with resources for finding a therapist with specific skills in any particular area. Another file with suggestions on selecting a therapist, and maybe another file explaining the process of therapy that gives members a " general " idea of what to expect. Maybe a few members would be ok with their therapy story being in the files for members to read. We have got this question at least three times in the last 5 days. Maybe we could come up with a standardized way of answering this very important question. Therapy seems to be a popular topic for us KOs. > > I am 53 and am just now coming to terms with the fact that my mother has BPD. Guest guest
Its true, very similar questions and topics do come up over and over again, but that's the nature of this support group: there are always new members coming and going. Each time someone asks, its a way to get to know them and give them personal feedback. I guess I don't mind it when similar questions and topics come up. -Annie > > > > I am 53 and am just now coming to terms with the fact that my mother has BPD. Guest guest
I think its friendlier and more democratic for all the members to share in greeting new members and answering the newbie questions, don't you? -Annie > > > > > > > > I am 53 and am just now coming to terms with the fact that my mother has BPD. Guest guest
You are right; I was just kidding. You attitude about this is good. I was only presenting an idea to the group. A person is probably more likely to try therapy if they get that personal touch. They will probably be more likely to participate in our discussions. If we " can " it, it will have less impact. I totally agree. > > > > > > > > > > I am 53 and am just now coming to terms with the fact that my mother has BPD. Guest guest
Lol! That's cool. I agree with you in that I wish there was a way to create and add files to the files section of this Group, for articles and sites we refer to often. If that were possible, I'd create a file for the short article about the " Medium Chill " technique. In lieu of a file, you can find the article about " Medium Chill " at post #132289. -Annie > > > > > > > > > > > > I am 53 and am just now coming to terms with the fact that my mother has BPD. Guest guest
I wanted to say thank-you to both of you… I really get the idea about having some pages about therapy; finding a therapist etc. and it would be helpful - a good idea. Also as someone who has to go through forums for work in the IT field I *know* how frustrating it is to have the same topic again and again and quick questions. I'm also really, really grateful for Annie's reaching out. I saw something you wrote Annie about the difficult process where emotions are about to break into the consciousness and I'm right at that point now. I don't understand the longish list of issues I was given on Monday or even how therapy helps. I also have been *so* un-listened to at home, at work, etc. that a part of me is crying out to be acknowledged rather than the DIY I've been doing for years. Just to have responses to the regular topics does help connect.
