Have you heard of the Feindgold Plan for ADD and ADHD? It was developed about 35 years ago by Dr. Feingold at Kaiser Pemenente Hospital in San Francisco. He calls for eliminating artificial colors, artificial preservatives and MSG. Statement from web site. The key here is the phrase: " Used to eat " http://www.feingold.org/home.html The Feingold Program itself is a test to determine if certain foods or food additives are triggering particular symptoms. It is basically the way people used to eat before " hyperactivity " became a household word, and before asthma and chronic ear infections became so very common. Used originally as a diet for allergies, improvement in behavior and attention was first noticed as a " side effect. " It is a reasonable first step to take before (or with) drugs for any of the symptoms listed above.

It was big when I was a young adult, and we were all testing for allergies like mad. I think it works and I'd use it on my kids if they had those kinds of issues, which fortunately they don't (maybe because we don't have much MSG or artificial coloring around here!). But the lady whose kids these are is VERY well informed and does lots of web searches and in fact I've learned a thing or two from her. Their reasons for not persuing dietary issues are not really lack of information. I didn't realise Dr. Feingold was from Kaiser. That was the group we used to go to when I lived in California. Being a " take care of everything for one price " kind of group maybe gives them more impetus to try inexpensive (read: non drug) therapies!
