Guest guest
I live in Plantation and love the city. As for the high schools - well, I don't think much of either of them. I put my dtr in a SVE room because of all the transitions in the high school setting at Plantation hs. She did well the first 2 years after much advocacy and pushing, now lets just say nicely - I can't wait for her to go into another program. They are not following IEP goals, nor do they seem to care, I have heard that South Plantation is equally at fault. If I were you, you might look at Coral Springs and Coral Glades HS. There is not enough funding in any of the schools here. You may also decide on a private school with a McKay Scholarship. There are a few smaller charter schools that may be better. Good luck. My daughter is 15 years old and will be starting 9th grade. She is on the more severe end of the spectrum, is nonverbal but does grade level school work using a letter board to spell and communicate. She has been doing RPM (rapid prompting method) since 2nd grade and is very successful at it. She has never been in a restricted setting because WI is a pro-inclusion state and she has a 1:1 adult support. I don't know if I want to continue with this full inclusion model throughout HS as I feel she needs more independence and vocational support. We have not bought a house yet but are looking at the plantation area. Can anyone give me the "scoop" on the high schools in Broward as it relates to nonverbal autism. We all know the best info is from parents! Feel free to email me privately at: vickimartin59@... or respond on the list. I thank you all for your time and any info you would pass on especially what schools to avoid. Vicki
