Guest guest
I sent out an alert to thank a couple of legislators that really helped us. Now I am asking you to contact the following legislators to tell them how unhappy you are with their actions. Contact Senate President Haridopolos, Senate Budget Committee Chair and House Speaker Cannon and let them know how disappointed you are in the outcome of the session and that their actions will harm the most vulnerable in our society. They say they care, but their actions do not follow their statements. They will tell you that the agency ran in a deficit and that cannot be tolerated. What they won't tell you is they took $110 million surplus away from the agency in 2005 and never returned it. The fact that APD hadn't spent it fast enough or appropriately is now turned into cutting funds. Who suffers? Our children and adults with disabilities. The agency added 5,000 people and it took longer than expected to set up cost plans and actually use the funds. So while the state took that surplus and now fast forward to today and they funded pet projects like the following: Speaker Cannon's $400,000 for the Lou Frey Institute of Politics and Government Will Weatherford's $6.9 million for the Wesley Chapel Center JD 's $46 million for USF Polytecnic Campus Senate President Haridopolos's $10 million increase for the Senate to prepare for potential legal challenges to redistricting. Interesting, since 60% of the voters of this state changed the constitution with amendments 5 & 6 in November and now he wants to use $35 million for legal challenges. Stupid me, how could I think that a majority of voters passing a constitutional amendment was stating the people want it? I guess if you are the Senate President, you can spend money on whatever you please. Let's not forget House Speaker Dean Cannon's decision to pay lawyers $300 an hour — with your tax money — to try to overturn your vote on this issue. The legislature socked away more than $2.2 billion in reserves and the budget is laced with hundreds of millions of dollars in hometown construction projects for powerful politicians, including a $5 million rowing boathouse in Sarasota, a botanical garden in Polk County, and more than $68 million for Speaker Cannon's home turf in Central Florida. Not to mention tax breaks for corporations that according to today's Orlando Sentinel are only paying 2% in taxes. More than 98 percent paid none at all. The cruise giant Carnival Corp. was a good example: $1 billion in profits and not a single penny in corporate taxes for the state. They will tell you that they use that money to hire people. The truth is they are boosting executive pay and simply sitting on the cash. We all know what the politicians get for their loyalty: big checks to their campaign accounts and even bigger checks for their "leadership" funds. All of this, while our population suffers. The reality is they would rather fund pet projects for each other, regardless of the negative effects on the most vulnerable in our society. They should be ashamed of themselves. Even though Senate President Haridopolos indicated he would fully fund APD's deficit for next year, he did not. With the rate cuts and the $56 million he didn't include to cover the deficit, we are looking at more cuts after July 1st. FYI, the House had the entire deficit covered and the Senate didn't. They negotiated it down to half the amount. This means that even after they agreed to reverse the Governor's emergency cuts in April, we are going to be right back where we started. FYI, Senator Haridopolos is running for US Senate in 2012, govern yourselves accordingly. Pres. Mike Haridopolos Senate President haridopolos.mike.web@... Sen.
