Guest guest
I have read that cod liver oil is way too high in vitamin A, has anyone heard this? I thought omega 3 was a safer choice for the same EPA and DHA? From: H. R. Guest guest
I have not heard of the Vit. A issue before with Cod Liver Oil, but I will tell you that it lowers cholesterol significantly. My son takes 2 tsps of Nordic Naturals Cod Liver Oil daily and it lowered his cholesterol to dangerous levels. I did not want to remove the cod liver oil because it has major calming effects on him in addition to the essential fattly acids it provides which is why it is the best source of EPA, DHA, and omega's for kids on the spectrum who are a little hyper. We had to start supplementing cholesterol three times a day to get his levels normalized. Guest guest
How often do you need to test his cholesterol level? Did his pediatrician prescribe a cholesterol med for him? Guest guest
cod liver oil may indeed give too much vitamin A--and it is not hard to overdose on A. Vit A also competes with Vit D for absorption, so too much A can lower D. There is no med the pediatrician would prescribe to raise a low cholesterol. They only prescribe meds to lower it. In fact, most pediatricians would not acknowledge a cholesterol level being too low, even though you make your hormones out of it. > > How often do you need to test his cholesterol level? Guest guest
So then does the cod liver oil have any benefits not found in omega 3 supplements? Other than DHA and EPA, does cod liver have any benefits I cant find in omega 3 (i.e., fish oil supplements)? thanks. Guest guest
presence of vitamin A from an animal source. According to Megson, PhD. some on the spectrum cannot adequately utilize A palmitate (plant source). Which means blood levels are adequate, but is not available to the body. It also contains D, but so does fish oil, although probably not as much. > > So then does the cod liver oil have any benefits not found in omega 3 supplements? Guest guest
Yes, his Dr. prescribed it and we get it from New Beginnings Nutritionals. It is called Sonic Cholesterol and it takes a Dr. script to get it. We test his cholesterol about every 4 to six months. Just got a test back and his cholesterol is a perfect 156. When we first started supplementing his level was 90. Three capsules a day did the job perfectly! Guest guest
As long as you are supplementing vit. D you should be fine, and yes, Cod Liver oil has a relaxing effect that other omega 3's do not have.
