Dear Sawgrass Elementary ESE Parents,

A meeting is being held this Wednesday, May 18th, for the Sawgrass Elementary community:  PTSA, teachers, and parents, as well as our ESE Parent Committee.  One or two representatives from each of the stakeholder groups will come to the meeting to share the five most important qualities that they want in a Principal.  This procedure is called a " Development Profile " .  This meeting is not open to the public.

We need to brainstorm on what are the most important things we are looking for in our new Principal. Please send your comments and what you are looking for in a Principal to:  Smartparents1@.... Some qualities we already heard from some parents were:

Someone who already has experience - who was a Principal at another school and is being transferred to ours and who has had a positive rapport and is highly regarded

in their community.

Someone who welcomes parents to participate and to be on campus.

Transparency that comes with an open door policy.

Your input is very important to us so please let us know what other qualities you are looking for in a Principal by submitting your responses to this email.

Thank you,

Announcement From

The Florida Developmental Disabilities Council

REQUESTING PUBLIC COMMENTS ON COUNCIL'S 2012-2016 STATE PLAN

The Florida Developmental Disabilities Council has been working on

developing its proposed 2012-2016 Council State Plan for over a year. We

have solicited information from individuals with developmental disabilities,

their families, caregivers, state agencies, developmental disabilities

organizations and other stakeholders. We have reviewed documents, conducted

surveys, facilitated focus groups, conducted interviews, and gathered

information from as many sources as possible.

The Council has met in subgroups and as a whole many times to discuss and

develop our proposed goals and objectives. While we are still doing some

fine-tuning, we are offering Floridians an opportunity to comment on the

goals and objectives that will guide our work for the next five years.

Please provide us with your comments regarding the focus of work for the

next five years. If you have specific suggestions regarding implementing

these goals and objectives, please include these as we will be developing

implementation activities over the next couple of months.

Your input, comments and suggestions may be provided by email to

fddc@..., by fax at , or by mail to Florida Developmental

Disabilities Council, 124 Marriott Drive, Suite 203, Tallahassee, Florida

32301.

The deadline for input, comments and suggestions is Monday, May 23rd, 2011.

Does anyone know what happened to the Bill that would assist in the

development of a Vocational College for adults with ID/DD?; the proposal

included a residential option for adults attending classes? Thanks.

Lucille,

I believe the bill itself did not pass, but some funding was allocated for the

development of the Vocational College.

Men's Sizes 28 to 42. All inseams are 34 " - easy to hem!

Silent Majority Introduction

HOW-

We attempted to search for basic jeans everywhere- in stores, specialty

shops, online, catalogs and asking everyone we knew. There were no jeans with

an elastic waistband available. We bought jeans and had them tailored. The

result was a jean that had a very narrow waist with no " give " over the

hips. They just didn't work. Finally, we started at the beginning. Design a

jean that has looks and the functionality we were searching for. The result

was Silent Majority Jeans.

WHY-

After years of struggling with bathroom issues, having support plans focus

on buttoning, zipping and buckling- we changed our expectations. Silent

Majority is based on simple solutions to issues that affect someone's day to

day, moment to moment existence. We are making an everyday pair of jeans

for everyday lives. A fashionable pair of jeans that is easy to pull up and

down. Manual dexterity issues do not mean intellectual disability issues. It

does make a difference when people dress with function and self

confidence. The stressors of how, when can be eliminated. Quality of life is quality

of moment. When you are free of the " little " things, it's amazing what you

can accomplish.

WHO-

Everyone

Made with quality, function and appearance in mind.

Easy to pull up, easy to get down.

Sometimes the answers are that simple.

(I am contacting you on behalf of S -- pictured above. He is a 19

year old man on the spectrum. We have been working at developing his own

business to move towards being financially self sufficient. We are launching a

clothing company called Silent Majority Jeans. The idea for this company

was born after trying to find cool jeans that were easily maneuvered. We

couldn't find any...so we decided to make our own.)

NJ creating housing for 600 individuals w/ ID/DD within two years

Posted by: " JLACP@... "

New Jersey to create housing for 600 people with disabilities

See

_http://www.northjersey.com/news/New_Jersey_will_create_housing_for_600_people_with_disabilities.html_

(http://www.northjersey.com/news/New_Jersey_will_create_housing_for_600_people_with_disabilities.html) for the

complete article: excerpts below.

“This is the state stepping up to the plate and saying we have to meet our

obligation to people with developmental disabilities and their families,â€

By contrast: as far as I can tell, Florida is not stepping up to the

plate. Florida's " plan " is the status-quo: to leave it to the private group

home industry (whose paid lobbyists " live " in Tally) and to count on the

parents/families to have individuals stay in the family home indefinitely.

This is a status quo that is not acceptable. The number of adults who need

affordable, safe, supported housing is growing daily. Not everyone will

be able to live with (aging) parents forever! and 40% of individuals

eligible for med waiver are wait listed w/ no prospects for funding in sight and

with 1500 over the age of 45. Ignoring this crisis is not an option.

BY HARVY LIPMAN

The Record

STAFF WRITER

The Christie administration on Tuesday announced a plan to create 600

community residential beds for people with developmental disabilities by June

2013.

The initiative will use money from municipal affordable housing trust fund

accounts, along with federally-backed tax credits, low-interest loans and

direct federal subsidies to pay for the residences.

“Is this going to fix the problem? No,†said Lowell Arye, executive

director of the Alliance for the Betterment of Citizens with Disabilities, the

state’s main lobbying group for the disabled. “Yes, there’s a need for a lot

more housing, but 600 beds over two years, that’s a great start. This

shows a commitment from the state to housing that has not always been a

priority of prior administrations.â€

The head of a _Paterson_ (http://www.northjersey.com/paterson) non-profit

that builds and operates affordable housing for the disabled agreed that

the initiative shows a new level of commitment from the state.

“This is the state stepping up to the plate and saying we have to meet our

obligation to people with developmental disabilities and their families,â€

said Bob Guarasci, CEO of the New Jersey Community Development Corporation.

“This is a multifold increase over what the state had been doing. It’s

only a fraction of what’s needed, but it’s something to celebrate.â€

The initiative’s funds will be spent to purchase and rehabilitate houses,

condominiums and apartments into one- to four-bedroom units for people with

developmental disabilities. All the residences will also include supportive

services from agencies that specialize in caring for the developmentally

disabled. The state expects most of the housing developers and service

providers to be non-profit organizations like the Arc, _Bergen County_

(http://www.northjersey.com/news/bergen) ’s United Way and the NJCDC, which already

are in the business of building housing for the disabled, running support

programs or both.

Workshops for Siblings of Children with Special Needs

Sibshops seek to provide siblings ages 8-12 with opportunities for peer

support within a lively, recreational context that emphasizes a

kids'-eye-view.

Saturday, May 14th

and

Saturday, June 18th

Additional Dates to be Announced

1:30 TO 4:30 PM

CMAA Therapeutic Recreation Complex

2728 Lake Worth Road, Lake Worth

$5.00 per workshop per child**

Sibshops acknowledge that being the brother or sister of a person with

special needs is for some a good thing, others a not-so-good thing, and for

many, somewhere in-between. They reflect a belief that brothers and sisters

have much to offer one another - if they are given a chance. Sibshops are a

spirited mix of new games (designed to be unique, off-beat, and appealing to

a wide ability range), new friends, and discussion activities. The Sibshop

curriculum is used throughout the United States, Canada, England, Ireland,

Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, Guatemala, Mexico, and Argentina.

Sibshops facilitated by Orlean Buckingham, MSW; Sachs, LCSW, JAFCO

Developmental Disabilities Program Coordinator; and Sandquist, The Arc

of Palm Beach County Director of Family Support Services.

I wish we could make it =/ Unfortunately Palm Beach County is too far of a drive. Would you ever consider doing something similar to this in the Broward or Miami-Dade area? If so let me know! I would love to help out :)

In August will be looking for a new position. Listed below are some of skill set I have working with children with Autism and Asperger students.

Developing organizational skills for students

Constant revaluation of in place systems to recognized students increasing maturity and capabilities

Involving student in a self-evaluation process to develop student’s own sense of self and diagnostic skills and development of strategies based on students own assessment of his abilities needs and solutions

Identify issues that were learning barriers for the student

Formatting testing to accommodate the student’s special needs

Diagnosing problem areas in test and correct format with altering the integrity of the test.

Helping student recognize and correct behavioral issues.

Working with teachers in classroom to bridge the gap between student and teacher.

ing a positive working relationship with faculty and administration recognizing school concerns regarding the unique circumstances of a family-employed paraprofessional in the school environment and developing trust, allowing the student fully to benefit from the working partnership resulting from the shadow’s inclusion as a full member of the school community.

Help with online classes replacing standard curriculum to accommodate auditory issues.

Transcription of teacher lecture materials.

Pioneered assistive technology in the classroom included instant messaging and web cam observation to minimize class disruption and encourage student’s independence and develop systems which make the shadowing relationship minimally invasion, adaptive and cost effective for a higher student to shadow ratio.

Have attended college readiness seminars for LD students.
