It depends on what deficits the person has. If I was told my son could only take one supplement then it would be cod liver oil. That being said, he has benefited greatly from Acetyl-L Carnitine, GABA, and Leucovorin (prescription strength Folinic Acid).

This is very true that each child has their own deficits. To be honest if you want to improve brain functioning in a child with autism, it is far better to start with the GI tract because the foundation needs to be working before the brain will ever function appropriately. The gut/brain connection is the answer. All the neurotransmitters that are in the brain also line the GI tract. Because of the GI issues such as yeast overgrowth, viruses, bacteria, fungus, Candida etc. the enzymatic function in the GI tract is not working properly and protein does not get broken down and absorbed in order to feed the neurotransmitters in the brain and have them function appropriately. In addition in some cases zinc is not being absorbed (metallothionine protein dysfunction) and you need zinc to produce Hydrochloric Acid in the GI tract in order to break down the food. When hydrochloric acid is low in the GI tract then secretin is not produced. Secretin is one of the important neuropolypeptides that connects to the brain...helps with internal muscle tone which is needed for speech, fine motor, bowel regulation, stamina, hand eye coordination, and so on. Making sure the GI tract has healthy intestinal flora, stopping the leaky gut from wreaking havoc is the place to start. If you bypass the GI tract the brain with these kids might not have the chance to be all that it can be....
