Guest guest
Hi everyone, I'm new to the list. We have been considering a move to the Orlando area (Longwood/Lake ), but I have also been reading that Broward county schools may have better inclusion practices. To make a long story short, we are in Texas and our experience with inclusion in our district has been awful. They expect kids to 'earn their way' in and are pretty backwards overall. My dd is 10 and very bright but has her challenges. I want a school district that believes in challenging all of its students and holds higher expectations for kids with disabilities to succeed in the general classroom. I've been reading about the Florida Inclusion Network and it seems like they do great work in this regard, but it's hard to figure out which schools are implementing collaborative teaching, etc. Anyway, appreciate any insight from anyone in either Broward or Seminole county on all this. Btw, I grew up in South Florida so I am familiar with the area. Thanks.
Guest guest
The Greater Orlando area also has an autism society. Contact ASGO.com. Broward is going backwards instead of forwards with inclusion. Guest guest
Forgot to add, we are considering Parkland for Broward. Anyone with experience with Parkland elementary schools? Thanks, Kim > > Hi everyone, I'm new to the list. Guest guest
Hi Kim,I lived in South fl for twenty five years. My son is almost 21 now. For the last three years I live in Seminole County. I love living up here, but there are many wonderful things about living down south. They have the Dan Marino Center, a much better CARD center. How ever the schools in Broward are all very over crowded in many areas. And for my son adult services were getting more difficult. That being said some of my friends kids are doing well. It really has so much to do with the type of child you have. And what type of program they would need. More importantly I would say do not make this decision on the County, or school. Things change so quickly. Pick an area that appeals to you and your entire family. Schools, teachers, ESE speciaist come and go. Lake is really pretty and the schools in Seminole County have been good for both my children. Everything is a trade off. Good luck,Kim GluskyFrom:N Subject: Re: Seminole vs. Broward County for InclusionDate:May 23, 2011 5:05:41 PM EDTTo:sList Forgot to add, we are considering Parkland for Broward.
