The Upledger Institute. Dr. Upledger. I believe it's in Palm Beach County. We used to go there when my son was little.

Does anyone know or recommends a DR. who specializes in Craniosacral System? My son has recently started sucking his thumb and fingers as well as biting his wrist and fingers. I read that therapy aimed at the Craniosacral System can help eliminate this problem, anyone have any experience with this? Thanks,

This is an anxiety problem and CranioSacral Therapy addresses calming down the nervous system as well as many other benefits so that would be a good choice. However, it would be extremely helpful to give your son some supplements to help calm down the nervous system on a daily basis. Is he taking anything right now and how old is he?

Calmer, more focused. Other than that, not really. It's so hard to determine what therapies benefit your child when you are bombarding them with everything as I did, when he was young. My husband is a chiropractor and firmly believes in adjustments and Dr. Upledger is one of the top in his field. Everyone at the Upledger Institute was great and very knowledgeable. Give them a call.

: the one supp that deals with anxiety and stress your son is not on...B5 - pantothenic acid. But it's another supplement and he's on so much. Why don't you go to Tunies or Wholefoods or the Vitamin Shoppe and buy Rescue Remedy. It's a liquid homeopathic for anxiety...you can even get it in a spray so it's easy. Give him some every day, but when you see him biting himself then use it also in the moment to calm down the anxiety.

Just out of curiosity...did you see this behavior as a result of initiating one of these supplements ... such as zinc, magnesium, carnosine or the 5HTP - they can be reactive. OR I noticed that he's on Leucovoren AND Folic Acid...that's the same thing...how much is he getting? Folic Acid and cause reactions. PLUS he's on two packets of VSL...that's a huge amount of probiotic, so you are going to get a die-off effect...

Why don't you cut back on the VSL and see if the behaviors stop...he just might be pushing the envelop with too much microorganisms and that will make him react to the dieoff. VSL is extremely potent...450 billion microorganisms which means he's going to have a lot of dieoff effect. That could very well be the issue.

Keep us posted.

I took him off of his Folinic acid when we added the leucovorin but I forgot to delete it off of his supplement list. Additionally, he is on VSL Double strength so it os actually 900 billion CFU's of bacteria. He has been on VSL DS at this dosage for about a year now but the biting and sucking on his fingers started about 3 months ago. He suffers from constant bacteria overgrowth so I hate to bump his probiotic back.

His Child Essence multi-vitamin and mineral has 20 mg's of Pantothenic acid and he takes that twice a day. When these biting and sucking issues started occurring we had not introduced anything new into his regimen so I have been baffled by the occurrence. He is also sucking on his shirt and biting his fingernails. I was thinking that they were just new and exciting stimms, but then I read an article on the Craniosacral system that described the behaviors and their causes so I thought I would check it out.

I will google rescue remedy and see if it something we can include. He is also on B-12 shots three times a week, NAC cream twice a day, Epsom salt baths, chelation, HBOT, and ABA therapy. It is like this kid is training for the Olympics! Getting him healthy is killing me! He is doing great however, people are shocked when they find out he is Autistic. His speech is delayed but he is almost caught up to his peers in that department, and he is beginning to be social and initiate play with his peers. I catch him playing imaginatively with his stuffed animals sometimes and I just melt. If we could just get some of his OCD and repetitive behaviors under control I would be stoked.

Thanks for the insight, I value your opinion.

If he's been on the VSL at that strength for a while, then it's not that. The pantothenic acid he's on is a very minimal dosage...he would need possible 500 mg. twice a day to make a dent in high anxiety behavior, but I think it's just easier using the Rescue Remedy. I always look at supplements because they can affect behavior and I look at biomedical to see what's causing the problem. Did the behaviors come after you started the detox regime or before...(NAC and Chelation)

From your description he is definitely on his way to recovery....the OCD is always the last issue to overcome because OCD borderlines normality. Inositol might help with that. Great news he's got imaginative play and beginning to socialize....he's on his way....

The nail biting besides the anxiety issue, biomedically can be a spleen deficiency. Spleen is the mother organ in Chinese medicine and requires nutrients for the blood such as iron. Now I know he's on B12 but it's methylcobalamin which is for the methylation process in the brain which we know that he needs. However, the regular B12 (cyacobalamin) feeds the red blood cells which in turn feeds the spleen. So maybe some red meat or foods that are fermented - see the Body Ecology Diet and autism... Folic Acid which is the other nutrient that feeds the spleen.. comes from leafy greens. We know that is not possible to get these kids to eat Kale, collards etc. which are nutritious leafy greens, but you can buy liquid Chlorophyll (get the one with 2 mg. of copper to stimulate the spleen) and give him a couple of tablespoons a day in his drink - juice or whatever he has. Chlorophyll comes from the leafy greens. It will boost the hemoglobin which will boost the iron levels to help feed the spleen. Hopefully this should also calm down the nail biting and maybe the shirt. It almost seems like pica which is an iron and zinc deficiency, so either way you are not too far off.

CranioSacral is a very effective therapy for the nervous system which will help all the senses which are on constant overload, calm down. My son had close to ten years of cranio. But as all therapies...it takes time and consistency...biomedical just works faster providing you hit on the right thing.(that's the little catch)

I think you hit on something I have been considering which is pica. My son has high lead levels, and I know that kids with high lead levels become lead seeking. He eats grass and puts lots of things in his mouth. I keep hoping that if we can ever get his lead levels down then most of this will clear up, but I am having great difficulties finding the source of the lead. We had out house checked, his grandparent's house checked, including all of his toys, opur dishes, water, etc. I have started suspecting his calcium fortified OJ so I have taken it away and continued to chelate and I will re-check his lead levels in a month or so to see if they have gone down. If it isn't the calcium in his OJ then I will drop back and punt again. How much iron and zinc should he be taking? He already gets 40 mg's of zinc and 20 mg's of iron a day.

....yes high lead leads to Pica or visa versa pica can lead to lead toxicity - we generally never know...The only way the pica is going to stop is to fix the absorption problem in the GI tract. The lead is probably not going to come out fully until his sulphur levels are up which includes glutathione. That will probably take some time. However, everything else makes sense - it's a pica problem from the lead and he is already detoxing on the protocol he is on, so the lead is probably starting to come out and increasing the symptoms...

40 mg. of zinc at his age is good...the question is ...is he absorbing the zinc? If his zinc is in his multi vitamin then we have to consider that it's not really being addressed. I know you are going to say that sounds crazy BUT, when you are targeting specific issues it is best to use the supplement directly and not in a combination because for some reason the effect is not as efficacious. So we need a separate zinc and it would be good if you could use a liquid one - Kirkman Labs has one AND the Vitamin Shoppe carries a really good ionic zinc that has some minerals in it to help with the absorption. You just need to follow the directions to give your son about 40 mg. of the liquid. As far as the iron is concerned...iron is one of the supps that is difficult from the get-go to absorb well because it tends to cause constipation issues, so that's why I like to use the liquid Chlorophyll with the kids because it is really absorbable. It's comes from alfafa greens that grow deep down in the soil and it enhances the hemoglobin, purifies the blood (gets rid of bad breath), makes the skin beautiful, makes the acidic body shift to being more alkaline...lots of good things. He can take two good tablespoons a day in his juice watered down. His stools will be green...but the main thing is this will help increase his iron.

Lead is found in cigarette smoke, airborne, in soil, water, children's toys...it's very hard to pinpoint the source and of course these kids are like sponges to everything toxic. I'd probably say that the soil is the most likely because of the pica. You are already trying to detox, so I think you would need to concentrate on stopping the pica so that the lead toxicity doesn't elevate anymore, and to stop these behaviors. Absorption in the GI tract is the name of the game. What enzymes are you giving him? What about his minerals? Minerals and enzymes make him more alkaline which is where you want to go to get the absorption happening.

He uses two different broad spectrum enzymes: Creon and enzyme complete by Kirkmans. As for his minerals he gets them through his multi called Child essence from integrative therapeutics. Here is a link where the ingredients are listed. I am going to go get some liquid Chlorophyll, thanks for the input. He does take a 30mg supplement of zinc in addition to the zinc in his multi. We do not have soil down here, just coral rock (we live in Key Largo), we have filters on our water (have a whole house filter system on my Christmas list this year), and we are non-smokers. I am on the hunt to track down the source of lead, I have already moved twice trying to get rid of lead but my kid is a lead magnet. I wish we could live in a bubble.

I know there's no soil on the beaches...what about the parks? I'm so sorry you had to move twice and still can't track down the source. Well, regarding the minerals, Child Essence only has the major minerals and not trace minerals. You might want to look into that because trace minerals are very grounding and really help with muscle tone and alkalizing. The one we used in the office which is effective and has no taste for the kids is Source Naturals Colloidal Minerals and Electrolytes. Usually kids with Pica are looking for minerals, that's why they eat inanimate objects....the earth is the best place because it's loaded with minerals BUT unfortunately today our soil is also loaded with chemicals and heavy metals. That should make a difference for him using those minerals. Hopefully this lead source will surface one day.
