Guest guest
Hi: I can speak only from my experience with Broward County. The schools at Broward will only approve ABA therapy in extreme cases. I was told once that your child has to have a behavioral issue where she could harm herself or others, for her to be able to qualify.... So get ready to fight for services big time!!! Wish you luck, and hope you do not have to struggle as I have! We get 10 hours of ABA a week from our regional center, and 25 hours of ABA a week from the school district, in addition to two hours of speech from the school district. We supplement with OT and Social Skills classes using insurance (benefits will be running out soon). Our concern is whether or not services are easy to locate in/around Port St. Lucie, and whether or not the school districts there are understanding and generous with services, or if we would have to fight tooth-and-nail for even a minimum amount of help.Any advice on school districts, ABA providers, well - anything would be greatly appreciated.Thank you.Kathleen
Guest guest
You will not be getting ABA in school here unless you go to private school, but there are some great providers in South FL. In school you can expect some OT and speech thats just about it. I am not an authority on this but that has been my experience. Florida has about the worst record for providing services to the developmentally delayed population. California has about the best so you will definitely see a big drop off in services when you move here. If you have insurance however, there are some great providers, but do not expect the state to give you anything. Just my 2 cents worth. Guest guest
I highly recommend NOT moving. Our developmental disabilities waiver (which is the big state provider for adults and children with disabilities) does not cover HFA, it must be autism. For those with a diagnosis of autism the wait is over 10 years and then many receive about $14k a year in services and that is when someone will receive ABA. You will not receive the same level of services in Florida. Hello: My husband is considering accepting a transfer his employer wants him to make to Port St. Lucie. Guest guest
We researched the area 3 years ago when we were moving to Palm Beach County and found it was very limited. Home prices were low but resources were scarce. We ended up moving to Royal Palm Beach. Resources are still less than Browards (where we moved from) but we have had a very positive experience with the schools here (2). It sounds like you have a lot more available to you where you are now. Sorry not to be able to bring you better news, L Maybe someone else has a little more knowledge and maybe things are better than they were 3 years ago. Good luck. Guest guest
, I have worked for Broward Schools for many years now ane never heard of a school ( excluding center schools) that provides ABA therapy (I assume you mean discrete trials therapy). Who are the staff members who are trained to do this and where are they located? What school are you talking about? Guest guest
We moved last year from Montgomery Co. in land where my son was getting everything he needed to Broward county under the premise that it was a good school district. Unfortunately the experience have not been a whole positive one and unless you have the resources to pay for ABA out of pocket or for any other therapy your child might need... sorry but news are not that good. I understand what you want, my son received ABA for 2 1/2 years at the school in land, from trained Special Education Teachers. Under the current circumstances with the schools here, you are not going to be able to find that. Good luck. Guest guest
Hi: I'm not here to give any school details. Like I said, I was speaking based on my experience, and back then (when I had asked specifically for ABA therapy services) that is what I was told. I must admit I do not know all the loops, regulations, services policies, requirements, etc., etc. from Broward schools, however I was simply giving my opinion. I should have been more specific on my email. Discrete trials are used in ABA, so I guess the teacher I spoke to during those times assumed it was the same thing. I've moved on from requesting extra services from Broward schools (my daughter receives ABA via other means), so I haven't followed up with it other that the common speech therapies. Thank you for your enlightenment. P.S. Kathleen, the message is still the same, you still have to fight every little service you want for your children in Florida!Mónica Subject: Need Help with Relocation DecisionTo: sList Date: Monday, May 23, 2011, 1:07 PM Hello: My husband is considering accepting a transfer his employer wants him to make to Port St. Lucie. Guest guest
DId your son receive ABA at a private or Public School in Montgomety County? I am interested in finding out how things are in Montgomery County because I am considering relocating there in the future. (I used to live in DC an NoVA years ago.)Can I communicate directly with you at your personal email address? I think that Broward has A LOT of room to improve in services and inclusion, and honestly, that is an understatement. But one thing I can say for Broward is that parents here are very supportive of each other and there is a real sense of community that I wonder if other areas have it as well? I joined a MD/VA yahoo group for parents with autism and people don't even respond to my questions/postings, and they just announce events but I never see people giving each other support. It's kind of sad.
