First of all, there are plenty of kids that don't like to

color/draw/etc. My " normal " 11 year old son is one of them. He

only writes what he has to for school, and he just got on Honor Roll

for his first semester at middle school.

If you are worried about the OT, you can request that the OT observe

your child next year. If there is a problem, then you can always

add OT later.

Yes, definitely push to keep OT. When was the last time he had a full

educational/medical OT eval? I would stress to the CST you still notice him

failing to want to color, draw, and that a more comprehensive eval needs to

be done b/c you feel he still needs OT for next year. How is he in cutting,

ABCs, numbers, etc. My son did not get released from OT until he was 8.5

and I still think he could have used another year. Now he has a new

diagnosis decoding auditory processing with written expression and specific

learning disability. They would not test for APD until he was 9. My

husband has this APD, so I knew around 3 yo my son had all the signs but I

let them use whatever diagnosis to get him therapy through school plus I

went privately to get speech/ot,sound therapy, vision therapy, etc.

Good luck,

Joanne

Hi All,

Have a question for those who've " been there and done that. " My son

just turned 6 and will start Kindergarten in the fall (we delayed to

give him one more year to improve his speech). I got a note yesterday

from his pre-school OT that she doesn't think he'll be needing

occupational therapy services next year. (She's basing this on his

fine motor skills only.) At home he hates to color, doesn't draw, and

I can rarely get him to even copy shapes, etc. I am afraid that once

he has to start really writing a lot we will see all new issues.

Should I push to keep OT? Are there things that kids with apraxia

often experience once they have more demands than the preschool write

your name/cut and paste? Studies or writings I can site?

THANK YOU ALL!

Great News right?

I would get a private evaluation to see how he compares to his peers

before agreeing to having him dropped from therapy.

Copying shapes can be a visual motor issue which can affect his

education.
