Guest guest
I have never heard of having the glands removed before – it sounds like a various serious surgery, and truthfully, I would not have had it done if that had been my choice. Can your doctor have any of his patients that had the surgery give you a call? I certainly wouldn’t have it done, unless I talked to a few people. I wonder why such a long recovery period? Is there any chance of incontinence? I disagree with your doctor and so does my doctor. You might give my doctor a call, he returns all phone calls (no charge), if you would like a second opinion. My vestibulectomy worked for three months, and I feel would have continued to work if it hadn’t been caused by my pudendal nerve. Most women who have PN have Vulvodynia or Vestibulitis or both. If you read the statistics, it says about 80 percent are cured with the surgery I had. That says there is a complete cure for 80 percent. The president of the NVA had it done ten years ago when it was considered serious surgery (they had not perfected the technique yet), and she is completely cured. That is enough for me to take a chance if I didn’t have PN, and I would do it again. What would you have to lose if you had the simple surgery? Of course it is your choice, but without any surgery, you are still left with the vestibulitis. nne From: VulvarDisorders [mailto:VulvarDisorders ] On Behalf Of Marcia Gallas Sent: Thursday, May 15, 2008 7:47 PM To: VulvarDisorders Subject: Re: Bartholin's Glands Removal Hi nne: Yes, we emailed offline about it. I read that it can take over an hour to remove EACH Bartholin's Gland. My doctor thinks that vestibulectomy by itself doesn't fully address the problem. So I was wondering if anyone here had those glands removed in addition to the " regular " vestibulectomy. I read that after this procedure one needs at least 2 weeks of strict bed rest. I just don't know anyone who has had the same procedure. I haven't even talked to him about it yet. I am attempting to wait until the end of summer as there are things in my life I HAVE to do. I'm wondering not only about recovery time but also wondering if there really is such a thing as a complete cure for vestibulitis. Thanks! Marcia > > Marcia, I had a Vestibulectomy. Guest guest
I have a personal friend years ago who had the Bartholin glands removed and was fine afterwards. She just always needed extra lube for sex although some physicians say it doesn't change that. But hers had swollen up to the size of a huge golf ball (normally they're the size of a pea at the 4 & 8 o'clock area) and it had absessed too. Some call it a bartholin cyst and the duct gets blocked and they can become infected. She let me see it, it was really weird to see that big thing hanging out of her and very painful. It's not that common (but not unrare) for one or the other to get infected, (they say 2% of the women) but certainly like any surgery it's not done lightly to remove them and only if necessary. In her case it kept returning. Another one I know of was able to shrink her swelling down with hot Epsom salts sitz baths and was fine and not bothered again. Some they are able to drain and they do ok. So it definitely depends on the circumstances. Here's a link about them for more info. http://www.aafp.org/afp/980401ap/hill.html Good luck if you go for the surgery hon, let us know.
