" Dear CARD Family and Friends, Alec Halberstadt was notified that he is a finalist for the Evert Children's Hospital " Powerful Kid Care Award " . He will be interviewed on NBC 6 on May 25, 2011 from 7:30-8:00 pm to discuss his fundraising for CARD and his volunteering as a Buddy Coach for children with Autism. We would appreciate your assistance in helping get the word out to the Autism community to vote for Alec. This will certainly help autism awareness. The winner will be the child who has the most online votes. Voting will be conducted online beginning May 23 and run through the beginning of June. Please visit www.powerfulkidcare.org/meet-the-finalists/ and vote for Alec! Alec Halberstadt is a 12-year-old who has found a way to keep healthy while also helping others. Every Friday night and Sunday afternoon he’s at the park volunteering as a “Buddy Coach” for the local Buddy Ball team. The team was set up so that high functioning kids with autism and related disabilities could have the opportunity to learn to play sports without the pressure of the regular leagues. They play baseball on Friday nights and basketball on Sunday afternoons. Alec is always there to encourage the kids to have a good time. This isn’t the only way Alec supports people with autism. For his Bar Mitzvah project, Alec created an 18-member team to raise money for the Dan Marino Foundation WalkAbout Autism. He raised $1,000.00. Alec also supports Artists With Autism, an organization his older brother, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, belongs to. Alec attends all of their events and exhibits. In his spare time Alec plays Flag Football with the I9 Sports league and was recently invited to the Junior National Honor Society at his school. *If you would like to be added to our email list, please click here: http://www.umcard.org/contact.php.
