Colonoscopy question-time sensitive

I'm just back from a wonderful trip to CA, visiting family, camping in Tioga

Pass, as well as

meeting Joanne H and S in Sacramento! Now the chickens come home too

roost,

however, as I have a colonoscopy on Thursday. They have instructed me to do a

Magnesium Citrate prep this time, which I have never done before.

Questions:

1. I have a 3 hour drive to the hospital for the procedure. Will things have

" calmed "

enough that we can drive from here at 5:30 am Thursday? Or will I still be

needing a

bathroom every 10 min? The alternative is to leave Weds at 2 pm, and arrive a

the hotel in

time for the fireworks starting at 5 on Weds. I have the hotel booked, but am a

bit travel

weary and would like to stay at home.

2. Previous preps using Fleet phospho soda have involved taking two bottles,

but often

the prep is complete after 1. Is Mg citrate similarly effective?

3. Any other advice on surviving this? This is something like my 9th

colonoscopy, but

honestly, I try to forget them as soon as possible, so I have lost count!

Thanks!

Martha (MA)

>I've only had one colonoscopy, but I had to take 5 laxatives and a

bottle of magnesium citrate. I began drinking the stuff around 6pm

(the night before the scope) and was finished with the bathroom by the

time I went to bed that evening. Had no problem in the am with

needing the bathroom every 10 minutes. Make sure you chill the drink -

much better that way. Good luck!

Martha -

I don't have colitis, but do have irritable bowel syndrome. Have had

mag citrate before sigmoid and Fleets Phospho Soda before colonoscopy.

Both kept me " going and going " past time of procedures. The

magnesium citrate took forever to work though - at 2 am I was thinking

I would be the only person to have ever " Failed " mag citrate. But

soon after, I was sure the cleansing process had begun (lovely at 3 am).

I would vote with whatever you believe would make you feel the most

secure. Knowing a 3 hour drive - I'd vote for one more hotel night

and no worries, but you need to be comfortable.

And it was wonderful to meet you while you were visiting. I really

enjoyed lunch with you and . It's so good to hear that your

trips to San Francisco and Tioga Pass were great.

Best of luck on Thursday. Let us know how everything goes (no pun

intended!).

Hi, Martha. My son had mag citrate as lower scope prep for 5 of his

scopes, plus enemas at home before leaving. For my son and how his

system responds, if it were a 3 hr drive for us, I'd have skipped the

enemas comletely, but still left enough surplus drive time to make a

few stops to use the bathroom on the way (nothing like every 10min,

though). For ease of mind, we might stay over a night early, but I

think we'd be able to swing that drive the morning of.

My son had Fleet w/ his last lower scope. They were about equal in

my son's case for how well they cleaned him out. He ends up taking 2

full bottles of mag citrate over 2 days, though he always throws a

bunch of it up (phospha, too).

If you can, keep it down. Throwing it up is the hardest part for my

son.

Good luck, Martha --on both the scopes and its results.
