Guest guest
The pain I had from intermittent cholangitis was just below my sternum - actually, just below the xiphoid process. Most people report upper right quadrant (URQ) pain, but mine was always exactly as you describe. I often got relief by drinking 3-4 glasses of water. Even moderate dehydration causes bile to thicken, further compounding the problem of narrowed ducts. It DID feel like gas pains. Guest guest
,Long before we knew my son had UC or PSC, he complained of this chest/sternum pain which we dismissed as indigestion.Who knew that it might be something more serious in an otherwise healthy teenager? While others can offer better advice on how to deal with it, I would guess that staying well hydrated with fluids might help.Leei was recently diagnosed with psc... does anyone else have pain below their sternum? it feels like gas or being bloated.... any remedies?thank you.cooper
Guest guest
My son had identical issues with chest/sternum pain, many years prior to PSC diagnosis. Reducing fat intake helps - alot, plus he has been on medication (H2 Blockers) for years. Some meds work better for one person than another - found Nexium works better for him than Prilosec, omeprazole or Aciphex. Guest guest
does anyone else have pain below their sternum?>>>> In the earlier stages of my psc my bouts with cholangitis (infection) always hurt right below the sternum. Another option might be acid reflux which mexium, prevacid, etc might help. I am on omeprazole which has helped heal one ulcer that was found during an ERCP. Guest guest
> > i was recently diagnosed with psc... does anyone else have pain below their sternum? it feels like gas or being bloated.... any remedies? > Hi , sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with PSC. I too have recently been diagnosed so I thought you might like to hear from a fellow newbie. I have both right upper quadrant pain and chest pain. The chest pain for me is attributed to esophagitis, gastritis and gastroparesis all caused by bile reflux due to PSC. I take 40mg Nexium daily as well as domperidone a motility drug that helps the gastro system along, I also take cyclizine to control nausea and vomitting. I found domperidone really helped to ease bloating. I also find eating little & often helps too. Out of interest have you had an endoscopy to investigate this problem, if you haven't might be worth mentioning the next time you see your dr. Further investigation might help pin point the problem, this worked for me. If you would like more details or to chat please e-mail me, would be nice to chat to a newbie. Best wishes (UK) PSC 07, recurrent esophagitis & gastritis, gastro paresis, osteopenia, endometriosis leading to total hysterectomy 2004, gallbladder removed 2005

Guest guest
That is where 's pain was for years. They kept thinking it was his Crohns but I said it was the PSC. He was hospitalized many times to control the pain and when he wasn't an inpt was on codiene at home. Question to the group. recently has had his Prograf levels climbing so they have been decreasing his dose. No other symptoms or lab changes. Has this happened to anyone else? Guest guest
in response to recent post from - my son complained of severe chest pain (Sternum area) for 2 years prior to his PSC diagnosis and had all the standard " upper GI " tests to try to pinpoint a cause (alergy tests, lactose tollerance, upper GI, endoscopy...) He tried several different acid blockers as well with no relief. His pain is often accompanied by his heart really pounding - Our old GI at Mass General and our new doctors at Children's - Boston did not think the pain was associated with the PSC (he also has well controlled UC) BUT - since going on Ursodiol about a month ago his pain has basically disappeared!!!! They are perplexed - Gavin and I are just happy he has some relief for whatever reason. I would be really interested to know about other members who have had similar symptoms as I would like to pass the info along to the Dr.s, so if you wouldnt mind a quick reply or email to me if you have had this " chest pain " I would be most appreciative. Also - if you could let me know if the pain is triggered by certain foods and how soon after eating you get the pain - that would be helpful too. Thanks in advance. Guest guest
If it improved with Urso, my guess is pain from blocked bile ducts due to " sludgy " bile and narrowed ducts. Urso will thin bile, which improves symptoms. I had similar pain before diagnosis (just below sternum), especially when I was moderately dehydrated - after running, for example. Most people report upper right quadrant (URQ), but I've never really experienced that - always been more centrally located.
