There have been studies linking certain degenerative diseases (might have been Rheumatoid Arthritis, not sure though) with decaf consumption (there was no increase due to regular...the opposite of what the researchers expected to find). There are non-chemical methods to decaf (like the swiss water method) but most places don't use them because they have a larger impact on the flavor of the coffee. You might want to check into some of the coffee alternatives if you want a non-caffeinated coffee-like beverage. There's one that Sally Fallon endorses, but I don't remember what it is...I think there are ads for it in Wise Traditions though. There's also a brand called Teeccino (http://www.teeccino.com/) that has some good blends. I don't personally recommend their " original " or " chocolate-mint " flavors, but their Java and Mocha flavors were pretty good. They, like most coffee substitutes, don't work very well with a paper filter. They tend to clog the pores in the paper and result in big overflowing mess. If you get one of those fine metal mesh reusable coffee filters though, it works great. You can make similar things yourself using combinations of roasted chicory, roasted barley, dark roasted barley malts, dates, roasted dates, blackstrap molasses, etc. If you have a source, roasted dandelion root is supposed to be good too...but personally I'd stick to the other ones for general use since dandelion root has specific medicinal actions. I'd think coming up with your own blend might be a fun diversion for a home brewer! Good luck! -----Original Message----- From: Alec [mailto:me@...] Sent: Monday, May 13, 2002 12:49 PM Subject: Morning Drink The only thing I miss from my old SAD was my morning coffee or cappuccino. I just realized I mis-read who I was responding to. I have no idea if you're a home brewer! It still might be a fun diversion though... :-)
