Last year, researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Center published a paper in which they found that the microglia when activated as how it happens in autism, are more poised to destroy a synapse (connection between neuron). Microglia are immune system cells that are derived from bone marrow that defends the brain and spinal cord. When the microglia becomes chronically activated, it can lead to neurodegenerative disease as how it happens in autism, Alzheimer's disease and many other mental illnesses. Microglia can become chronically activated by the same " common " viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections that children with autism often suffer from. SCIA believes that by treating these " common " infections, supporting immune system function and specifically inhibiting microglial activation, not only can mental illnesses be completely cured, but also all the other medical symptoms associated with it.
