Guest guest
I think that comparing sensory, calming rooms with appropriate supervision to " isolation cells " that are used as punishment is very scary. Too totally different approaches to the same behavior. But I think we must look at these techniques very differently. Unfortunately, I often see people lumping them together in one category. I have worked very diligently with my son's staff and our environment at home to create a safe, non-judgmental method to handling my son's outbursts. It's not perfect, and I need to continue to make changes as time progresses. Now his school situation is another story. I've worked with them as well, but we continue to have issues. It seems better for awhile and then something occurs which makes me wonder whether I should pull him out of school all together. I also think that we as parents need to educate each other and learn from each other as to how to handle our aggressive and/or self-injurious children as the schools and governmental agencies continue to let us down.
